Title: USING REAL-WORLD STANDARDS TO ENHANCE STUDENTS
PRESENTATION SKILLS
Published: September 2004

The journal that I found over successful presentation skills stated that
presentation skills were some of the most important skills needed by
business students. In fact, it says that most colleges now require at least one
communication class in their business college. The article also makes a point
to say that the communication classes strive to go by real world standards
when teaching communication. In order to give effective presentations
students have to learn how they will be expected to present when they are in
an actual business setting. Ashland University was the first college to
implement this practice. They required business students to practice oral
communication in multiple classes.

Initially when they required students to start practicing oral

communication their grades were not that good. The next semester they
decided to spend an entire class period going over how to give a successful
presentation. This was a typical 75 minute class. With some direction the
students began to score higher and higher on these presentations, but still
not all students passed this assignment. The next semester they spent even
more time going over what a successful presentation would consist of and
every single student passed the assignment. This time they had spent 100
minutes reviewing successful presentation strategy. The students werent
completely capable of giving a good presentation to start, but with practice
and direction the students were ready to be thrown into the real world.
