Howard University Town Hall

With so much happening with administration and student relations this year, one major

factor that stands out amongst them all was the lack of transparency. Students have committed

acts of resistance in order to gain attention from Howard University President, Wayne Frederick,

and speak on the things that they would like to see changed. These Town hall meetings were

definitely a step in the right direction. Frederick spoke on some of the multiple changes hes

looking to enforce here at Howard while also detailing certain publicity events students may

have seen.

The first matter of business was to share the dealings of the Undergrad Library, which is

to be finished this summer with the $21.5 million Howard received from their Meridian deal.

Wayne Frederick also discussed the visit he had with Secretary of Education, Betsy Devos, by

saying his actions wouldve been the same had Hillary Clinton been elected and if he couldve

shared different aspects of the meeting with students, he wouldve. He also shared that he was

upset with the graffiti on Howards campus partly because his children faced backlash at their

schools because of the words said about him. Looking back on the event, the words painted on

our yard were a bit on the extremist side. However, I understand that a point was trying to be

made by doing so.

All in all, I believe the town hall was a great step forward. We still have a long way to go

before his approval rating changes overnight, but, I also believe with the correct and necessary

steps, we could see the change coming sooner rather than later.
