Greetings
1. Write dialogue.
Working in the service industry. Say how a delegation of scientists attending a
conference at a hotel is greeted by the receptionist or how a client is greeted at a
travel agency.
Greeting someone older than you.
How to be polite to someone you do not know well.
2. Find the right context for uttering these statements.
Right then, I suppose its time I made a move.

3. How would you ask for permission in the following situations?


Use Can I .? Could I ? Or May I .?and these verbs: borrow ,join , look at , use
1.You are at a friends flat. You want to make a phone call.
2. You need a calculator. The person sitting next to you has got one.
3. You have gone into a caf. Three people who you know from work are sitting at a
table. You go over to the table.
4. You had to go to a lecture but you were ill .Your friend went to the lecture and took
notes. Next day you are well again and you see your friend.

4. Match the expression with the opinion.

8. Read the police report of the accident. Then write the policemans questions.
I asked the driver of the jeep who he was and what he did. Mr David Piper replied that he
was a radio producer for the BBC. He said that he lived in London and that he was going
to Colombo. He said he and his colleagues had been in Sri Lanka for two weeks, and had
an appointment to interview Mr Arthur C. Clarke. He said that the mini bus overtook
their jeep. It then slowed down, probably because of the difficult road and Mr Pipers
jeep hit it. Mr Silva, the other driver, said that he overtook because Mr Piper was driving
very slowly. Suddenly Mr Pipers jeep started to go faster and then it hit Mr Silvas mini-
bus.
9. The University has designed a webpage to forward the queries of the
undergraduates to the Engineering Council of Pakistan. You have been asked to
write down the querie you have. OR A seminar is being held in your University. The
speaker is the Head of the Engineering Council. Frame questions to ask him during
the seminar.

What are the job prospects for graduates of this field of study?
I am seriously thinking about majoring in Biomedical Engineering. I want to
know how much money biomedical engineers make.
