Conflict Resolution Program

Design Plan

Part 1. Background:

The Director of Engineering at Imaginary Inc., a software company with a

highly diverse employee demographic, requested a 30 minutes training course to

help mangers deal with conflicts and resolve the problems with minimum

involvement the HR department. The aim of this course is to help team

heads/project managers identify conflicts and use proven techniques to resolve

those conflicts constructively. By resolving conflict, departments can increase

productivity, minimizing overtime and increasing employee retention leading to the

main business need, which is containing cost.

After completion of this course, learners will

Identify the common cause of conflict

Identify the source of conflict between the disputants

Construct a solution both disputants can support

Create a solution that both parties agreed on

Part 2. Format

Taken into consideration the target audience, their busy schedule and their

preferences, the training course will be delivered in an asynchronous learning

format. In the self-study format the learners will be able to study during their free

time. The material will be available on demand. The modules will have a pre

scripted narrations and instruction to guide the learners through the program.

Leaners will get immediate feedback to the activities/assessments.

Part 3. Communication Medium

The Modules of the self-study course will be available online. Online

asynchronous mode will allow learners to access the course material according to

their preference. It will not restrict them to a certain time or place making it more

convenient for learners with a busy schedule. Online courses do have higher

production cost, but will be cheaper on the longer run. This is because they require

less planning when it comes to booking venues, hiring instructors and

preparing/printing supporting material. Having the course material available online

means that the learner can access it any time making it easy for them to review that

material when they need to apply it.

One of the drawbacks of self-study online format is that there is no live

interaction with the instructor or other learners, which means discussion and

feedback is limited to whatever is provided by the modules. Another disadvantage is

that changes cannot be done quickly to accommodate different learners needs, so

when designing the program, the designer needs to try to incorporate as many

needs as possible without overloading the modules with unnecessary material.

Another major drawback is the possibility of technology let down. There is always

the possibility of slow or lost internet connections and other technical issues that

the learner might face which will cause frustration.

Given the number of possible learners and their busy schedule and the fact

the rooms that are available for instruction only seats 12-25 having to schedule face

to face in classroom training might lead to the possibility of requiring several

sessions to accommodate all the learners. It was agreed upon with the sponsor that

self-study online format is the best option giving the advantages it provides.

Part 4. Overall Instructional Strategy

The course will be following the a mix of classical and mastery learning

strategy. It will follow classical approach through unit 1.the rest of the units will

follow the mastery learning strategy in. In this strategy the learner will is expected

to build on existing knowledge. The learner is expected to master the concepts

delivered through repetition. This strategy allows learners to learn on their own

pace, which seemed fit for the format chosen for this self-study course. Mastery

learning does not focus on finding the right answer, but believes that from the

mistakes that a learner does and with the proper feedback he/she will be able

discover new things in the process. (Pappas, 2014)
