Hattiesburg country band takes home first prize

A country band from Hattiesburg won first prize in the

seventh Battle of the Bands event, hosted by the Campus

Activities Board on Saturday in the Colvard Student Union

Dawghouse.

Thanks to everyone who helped, Battle of the Bands turned

out to be a great event. A total of 10 bands participated while

being judged by faculty from the music department. Campus

Activities Board President, Shayla Smithson, a junior education

major from Scooba had this to say about the judges tough job in

making a decision.

Ultimately, they decided country band, Ten Pounds Sterling,

was the winner. Those guys won $100 in cash, Smithson said.

For a second year in a row, second place went to speed-metal

band, Play Fighting, and third place went to new band, Kissing

Flamingos.

An estimate of 80 people came to show support to the bands

and CAB. Jimmy Coronado, a senior business major from Winona

shared his thoughts about taking home second place.

Man, we wish we would have won, but second place is better

than no place, so we will take it, Coronado said.

It was Play Fightings second time to take home second

place, while it was Kissing Flamingos first time in Battle of the

Bands. Kissing Flamingos, was honored and surprised to place

third.

Having grown up together, Ten Pounds Sterling has been

playing for years. Sterling Wilson, a junior communication major

from Hattiesburg, who is the drummer for the group had this to

say.

It was an amazing experience, and we cant wait to defend

our title next year. Watch out Ten Pounds Sterling will be

back, Sterling said.
