Guided Observation One Contextual Factors

Interview your mentoring teacher to obtain the demographics about the school. Write a
response for each question in a paragraph format.
1 Record the number of males, females, and ratio of ethnicity within the
classroom.

In Mrs. Bs room, there were eight boys and eight girls. There were three Hispanic
students, one African American student, and the rest were Caucasian.

2 What are the development levels of the students within the classroom you
are observing?

Three of the students are Hispanic, so they alternate being taken from the classroom
during morning work. There are three other students in the classroom who also alternate
going to another classroom at the same time, but with a different teacher.

3 How is the instruction modified to meet the diverse needs of the students?

The teacher uses many different ways of introducing material to her students. She will
sing songs to help students remember things (she is a kindergarten teacher so it works
particularly well for her class). She uses small groups to help the lower tier students work
with their peers to understand classwork better. She also plans fun activities for the
students to relate materials to things they already know.

4 Research the school and the Tennessee State Government web site to
obtain information about the school community, school report card, and
school population.

There are six hundred and five students that are enrolled at Mt. Horeb Elementary School
as of April 2017. No other school community statistics, data or information could be
obtained through either the Tennessee State Government web site. The school is fairly
new, so information as of now is not available.

5 What are the specialized programs/activities found within the school that
would assist special needs children, those who need enrichment activities,
or remediation? List the specific programs that are available.

The school counsellor, Ms. Debbie, applies ASCA Ethical Standards to ensure that all
decisions are based on the highest oral principals in order to promote the maximum
development of every student (according to Mt. Horebs website). No other information
on specialized activities or programs were able to be obtained from the school.
