Making a Boutonniere

Objective: Students will be able to design boutonnieres using the principles and elements of
design.
Problem: You have started a boutonniere business for the upcoming school dance. You need to
create appropriate boutonnieres for your customers that look good but dont take too long to
create.
Materials Needed:
1. Flower (any kind)
2. Floral Tape
3. Scissors
4. Accent Plants and Foliage
5. Ribbon
6. Floral Wire (wire Cutters)
Instructions:
1. Gather Supplies
2. Cut flower leaving only of an inch for the stem
3. Cut Floral wire into 6 inch pieces
4. Cross wire through the calyx (base of the flower) be careful not to get the
blossom, this could make your flower fall apart
5. Bend the ends of the wire down and together
6. Cover with wire starting from the calyx all the way to the end of the wire,
stretch tape as you go, this will make the tape stick to itself
7. Arrange accent foliage and ribbon using the principles and elements of
design

12. Proportion
13. Scale
b. Tape accent foliage to flower, creating one large stem
c. Trim bottom of the boutonniere to about 2 inches in length OR curl bottom wire
d. Add ribbon around the stem (if desired)
