Chapter 5: Using Supervision

Supervision within my internship field placement was not as depicted as it is at

my professional workplace. I did not see much supervision going on through the United
Way of Delaware, not to say that it did not exist. I myself did not have a routine
supervisions schedule at my internship placement, which is one think I would have
expected more of.
At my professional workplace, I receive supervision every other week on the
same weekday at the same time. It is scheduled on a very consistent basis and if it is
cancelled for some reason, it is always rescheduled. Within my program, I have very
productive supervisory experience. We also have weekly team meetings on the same day
of the week at the same time. I feel as if our supervisory schedules as individuals and as a
team are very effective as well as very productive.
I have learned through my profession that supervision is key to communication
between staff and their supervisors. I have always held my end in my supervisions and
have brought to the table the topics that I needed to discuss. I have always participated
and have been active in my supervisory meetings and I take constructive criticism and
apply it to better my competency as a human services worker.
When I was a short-term supervisor, I was responsible for having supervision with
the other staff in my department. Although I was nervous being I was in charge of the
supervision of my coworkers, I was surprised at how well they trusted in my supervision
and applied my suggestions to their work. I learned that as long as you are able to show
your supervisees respect, that you will establish a trusting professional relationship.
