We need to train our artistic sensibilities.
Today we are going to look at an artists work and critically review her work using the
elements of design.

Connection to Previous Lesson:

In the past, you have made clay pieces with smooth or rough textures. You have glazed
your clay pieces in bright primary colors. You had a desired effect in mind when you created
your pieces. Today we are going to look at an artist and evaluate her/his work

Teaching Input: (Describe your detailed, step-by-step description of the sequence of

instruction.)
Greet students at the door
Ask the students to sketch one of Keiko Masumotos or Tjok Dessauvage clay pieces
Active Involvement: (Describe what students will do in a short practice session to
demonstrate understanding)
I will then ask the students to discuss the next 2 pieces by Keiko Masumotos using the
elements of design. I will have the elements of design written on the power point -this is an
intro class and these students need encouragement.
I will ask the students what they like about the clay piece? Why?
I will encourage class involvement.

Shared Follow Up/Formative Assessment (Describe how you will provide an opportunity for
students to share work, ideas, review, etc. Describe your formative assessment tool or
strategy.)

The class will hold an informal discussion about this artists works.

Each table will have an element of design written on card stock. Each table will share with
the group a remark about this element of design and Keiko Masumotos art work.

I will cold call on two students. (I will use my mentor teachers cold call cards to call on
students.)
