Reading Reflection #6
For this chapter, the authors discuss the educational equality for students with disabilities.

Throughout the chapter, it discusses ways that we as teachers, how both general education

teachers and special education teachers need to work together in order to provide the best

education we can for students with disabilities and special needs. Since teachers in general

education classrooms will not be fully aware of all of the attention and services students with

disabilities in their classroom will need, its crucial that they co-teach with the special education

teachers, that way the general education teachers can provide the students with the best education

they can. Since special education teachers cannot be with these students all day while they are in

the general education classrooms, its important that the general education teacher provides

constant feedback about the childs behavior in the classroom and how they interact with others

as well as how they are doing in the classroom overall.

This chapter also discussing how labeling students with disabilities, can negatively

impact their self-esteem and confidence. When labeling a student, you are classifying them with

a specific group of students they may or may not fit in with or be similar too. Labeling these

students causes them to have low self-esteem because its been decided for them that they are not

like other students or their peers. As teachers, we need to be understanding with these students

about how they might feel being categorized by you or others around them. They need to be

treated just like every other student in the classroom, they are no different than them.
