Honors 3000 Service-Learning Reflection

For my service learning requirement, I took BME 2920. This is a design lab class where

groups of students work on projects dealing with various medical problems. My group worked

on a solution for emphysema and COPD patients inability to breathe in oxygen efficiently. The

result was a portable oxygen concentrator machine. Our groups final poster, is included in the

section below.

I think that this class has proven to be very beneficial in my growth both as a student and

a professional. The work itself is heavily research-basedevery decision about the device, such

as its target audience, specifications, etc. needed to be justified with facts and data. At the same

time, the research is not only kept in the classroom but applied to the publica prototype of our

device was made and was presented to experienced industry representatives, medical

professionals, and experienced faculty members for feedback and possible opportunities for

commercialization. Overall, this class does a very good job of integrating classroom objectives

with the community. It aims to take real-world problems and devise solutions through research,

and relays the solution back into the community.
