PRESIDENTIAL MOCK ELECTION


THE RACE IS ON! IN A FEW SHORT WEEKS, THE 2016 ELECTION WILL BE OVER AND THE
UNITED STATES WILL KNOW WHO THE 45TH PRESIDENT WILL BE. MOST OF YOU WILL NOT BE
ABLE TO VOTE IN THIS ELECTION, BUT YOU CAN STILL HAVE A VOICE. OVER THE NEXT FEW
DAYS, WE WILL BE WORKING IN GROUPS OF 6 TO PARTICIPATE IN A MOCK ELECTION. THIS
PROJECT WILL CALL ON YOUR KNOWLEDGE FROM CHAPTERS 1, 5, 6, AND 7. YOU WILL
NEED TO PUT YOUR POLITICAL BELIEFS ASIDE, AND FOCUS ON THE ASSIGNED
PARTY.

OUR CLASSROOM ELECTION WILL USE THE FOLLOWING 5 POLITICAL PARTIES THAT WILL BE
ON THE MICHIGAN BALLOT THIS NOVEMBER:

1. REPUBLICAN PARTY
2. DEMOCRAT PARTY
3. GREEN PARTY
4. LIBERTARIAN PARTY
5. US TAX PAYERS PARTY

EACH OF THESE PARTIES HAVE THEIR OWN SPECIFIC PLAN FOR TACKLING THE NATIONS
PROBLEMS. STUDENTS WILL BE PLACED INTO 5 GROUPS, WITH EACH GROUP REPRESENTING
A POLITICAL PARTY. EACH STUDENT WILL PLAY ONE OF 4 ROLES, AND WILL BE RESPONSIBLE
FOR SPECIFIC MATERIAL. IT IS UP TO THE GROUPS TO ASSIGN ROLES.

THE CANDIDATE: (ONE STUDENT)

THIS STUDENT WILL BE THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE FOR THEIR PARTY. THIS
STUDENT IS REQUIRED TO WORK WITH THE GROUP TO:

____3PTS- FIND THREE PIECES OF INFORMATION IN THE TEXTBOOK THAT PERTAIN


TO PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES. (CHAPTERS 5, 6, 7)

____5PTS- DEVELOP A CAMPAIGN SPEECH THAT THE CANDIDATE WILL PRESENT IN


FRONT OF THE CLASS. THIS SPEECH WILL INCLUDE:

THE THREE RESEARCHED ISSUES AND AN ACTION PLAN FOR THESE


ISSUES, INFORMATION FROM THE TEXTBOOK, WHY THE VOTER SHOULD
CHOOSE YOU OVER THE OPPOSING CANDIDATES, AND ANYTHING ELSE
THE CAMPAIGN TEAM RECOMMENDS.
O THE SPEECH WILL BE 1-2 MINUTES IN LENGTH

THE RUNNING MATE: (ONE STUDENT)


THIS STUDENT THE VICE-PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE FOR THEIR PARTY. THIS STUDENT
IS REQUIRED TO WORK WITH THE GROUP TO:

WILL NEED TO USE THE REAL VP CANDIDATES FOR THIS RESEARCH. FOR EXAMPLE,
FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, YOU WOULD NEED TO REASEARCH MIKE PENCES
POSITIONS ON THE SAME THREE ISSUES THAT THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE
CHOOSES TO USE.

____5PTS- IDENTIFY THE DEMOGRAPHICS THE CANDIDATE AND PARTY APPEALS TO.
(AGE, GENDER, MARITAL STATUS, RACE, EDUCATION, INCOME, OCCUPATION).

____3PTS- WHAT STATES SHOULD BE TARGETED BY THIS PARTY FOR THE MAXIMUM
NUMBER OF VOTES.

____4PTS- FIND 4 PIECES OF INFORMATION IN THE TEXTBOOK THAT PERTAINS TO


CAMPAIGNING. (CHAPTER 5, 6, 7, 8)

____5PTS- EACH CAMPAIGN TEAM WILL MAKE A 1-2 MINUTE PRESENTATION


OUTLINING THEIR CAMPAIGNS STRATEGIES. THE SPEECH SHOULD FOCUS ON THE
THREE BULLETS ABOVE.

THE MEDIA STRATEGY TEAM: (2 STUDENTS)

THESE STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO:


O DESIGN THE MEDIA BEHIND THE CAMPAIGN FOR THEIR PARTY AND CANDIDATE.
____10PTS- DEVELOP AN ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN WITH AT LEAST TWO SEPARATE
PROJECTS. EXAMPLES INCLUDE: NEWSPAPER ADS, CAMPAIGN POSTERS, POLITICAL
CARTOONS, COMMERCIALS, ETC.

____3PTS- USE CHAPTER 8 TO FIND 3 PIECES OF INFORMATION THAT PERTAIN TO


THE MEDIA.

O STUDENTS SHOULD CONSIDER THE MATERIALS THEY WILL NEED TO CREATE


FOR THESE PROJECTS. THE ONLY PROVIDED MATERIALS ARE COMPUTERS,
CRAYONS, AND PAPER. ALL OTHER MATERIALS WILL NEED TO BE BROUGHT
FROM HOME.
____5PTS- BOTH MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA TEAM WILL MAKE A 1-2 MINUTE
PRESENTATION. THE PRESENTATION SHOULD INCLUDE:

HOW DID YOU USE THE CAMPAIGN SLOGAN IN YOUR ADVERTISEMENT?
WHAT FORMS OF MEDIA WILL BE CHOSEN TO REACH YOUR PARTYS
SUPPORTERS? (BASED ON THE DEMOGRAPHICS)
WILL THERE BE ANY NEGATIVE CAMPAIGNING AGAINST OTHER
CANDIDATES? WHY OR WHY NOT?

STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN TWO FULL CLASS PERIODS TO WORK ON THIS PROJECT. THEY
MAY ALSO WORK AT HOME. WE WILL PRESENT ON ________________________. THERE
WILL BE A FINAL CLASS VOTE AT THE END OF THIS ELECTION.

PARTICIPATION:

THERE WILL BE A PARTICIPATION GRADE INCLUDED IN THIS PROJECT. YOU WILL WRITE ON
THIS BLANK SPACE BELOW ANY CONCERNS YOU MAY HAVE HAD ABOUT MEMBERS OF
YOUR GROUP AND THEIR LEVEL OF PARTICIPATION. PARTICIPATION IS OUT OF 8 POINTS.
