As a science teacher, specializing in the subject areas of Biology and Integrated Science, I
often assume a number of roles. These roles are primarily to emphasize the importance of
scientific knowledge, and facilitate the most effective methods of knowledge acquisition and
One of my main roles as a science teacher is to make students appreciate the need for
scientific knowledge, and to understand the importance of its application to their everyday life.
Once they are able to recognize a connection, the subject becomes more meaningful to them, and
this sparks an interest to learn. It therefore becomes my responsibility to employ enjoyable and
effective strategies to maintain their enthusiasm and interest in the subject area.
Another role as a specialist science teacher is to understand the Biology and Integrated
Science curriculums; and to develop effective methods of instruction and assessment to ensure
all criteria proposed by the curriculum are accomplished. The methods adopted for instruction
must meet the needs of all types of learners in the classroom, thereby guaranteeing all students
learn equally. The types of assessments must vary as well and not necessarily be confined to pen
and paper. This ensures that the manner in which all students retain information is equally
assessed.
Encouraging critical thinking by the students, using the scientific method as a guide, is
also a key role of a science teacher. Laboratory exercises can be used to accomplish this, and
they not only familiarizes students with laboratory equipment and their importance, but also
provides a means of obtaining reliable data upon which assumptions and conclusions can be
made.

surroundings as a means of providing information relevant to everyday life. Their biotic and
abiotic environment is constantly involved in a series of interactive processes which sustains life.
Science students in particular need to be aware of these as it adds greater meaning to the subjects
