JURCA KJ-7 MUSTANG
one of the latest designs of Yarcel Jurca is an almost exact two thirds
replice of the fancue North American PS1D Mustang Fighter of World War IL ané immediate
post war period. ‘This aircraft first appeared during the wer, designed and built to
the specifications of the British Air Ministry. Tt used a Rolls Royce Merlin engine
built under liconse in the U.S. by Packatd Motor Company. Kany of these aircraft saw
service with U.S. Air Force, the Soyel Canadian Air Force and, of course, the Royal Air
Force, as well as many other air forces throughout the world. Sinco about1955 many of
them were declared obsolete and appeared on the surplus market. Quite a few are now
being used for sport aircraft and fast personal transportation.
The average amateur pilot can ill afford to spend the cost for 50 ox 60
gallons an hour for fuel, plus oil, plus the maintenance and upkeep required for such
@ thirsty beast of on airplane. Reduce the fuel consumption to 6 er 8 gallons an hour
and ite size o little at the exponse of the speed reduction to 125 to 175 mph., and
your answer is Jurca's Mustang.
Marcel Jurea, living in France, has previously designed the little single
seat Tempete, the Shadow, and later the two seat Sirocco. All these are onall fully
aerobatic aireraft of e very simple construction design for those who vant sonetining
snappy with a militery look.
Instead of the bubble canopicd PS1D, the builder may choose to make his
version the Mustang 1 or 2, P514 or P51B. ‘These models used a high turtleback and plata
sliding back canopy. These were equipped with the Allison Y12 engine and thre bladed
Prop.
& great vortety of camouflage and color schemes await selection by the hono~
built aixplone enthusiast. Juct think, a squadron of MJ-7 Mustangs could be built by
an E.A.A. chapter!
CONSTRUCTION
The basic principles of construction are the sane in the Mustang as in the
Sixocee ond Tonpote. It is very similar te model airplane construction in its
sinplicity. Jurca's MWJ-7 is basically all wood and makogany plywood. Some paxts are
birch plywood and strengthening blocks of ash. The fuselage is built up of two sides,
plywood covered, and thon joined with forners top and Lotton. The forners are plywood
covered, and extensive use of balsa wood for fillets and other details is specified.
The plans show the detailed construction of the lerge radiator seoop asseably under the
center of the oirerafe. ‘the tail is very eimple structure, using plywood ribs, and is
plywood covered.
‘The wing spar ie a maseive structure with laminated top bottom flanges with
plywood webs front and back. The spars are tapered in thickness, and the flange
assemblies are fishnouthed towards the tips. The 130 Ibs. spar is very strong
(stressed to 9g), so there should never be any fear, even with a 200 hp. engine, of
the spar ever being a source of a failure, The wing ribs are all plywood with rein-
forcing cap strips. The entire wing is plywood covered. The wing is flap-aquipped
and these, as well as the ailerons, are also plywood covered. The inward retracting
undercarriage can be pulled up either manually, using a screw jack, or with sowe other
automation such as a reversible olectric motor. It follows the samo principle used
and proven on the Sirocco and Tenpete. Standard plans show a fixed tailwheel. However,
supplemental plans are available for a retracting type.‘The control system uses ‘a simple stick-type [Link] and simple bar
type rudder control. Control surfaces arc cable operated, using the Sane parte thet
axe otandord fox the Tanpate, Jodols ond other decigns. tho fuel system oaploys two
13 imperial gallons fuel tanks, one in each wing, aft of the spar. An engine fuel
puap is required.
Being of all wood, it is necessary to properly protect the aircraft interior
structure with a good coating. We have developed a special Folyurethane called "Kipec
Plastithane!'. It {s tough and wear resistant. It is superior to other polyurethanes
and far superior to opoxy ond polyester coatings, collulose, acetate, butyrate and
nitrate dopes. The entire aircroft is finished in a thin fiberglass cloth and three
or four coats of brushed ox sprayed Wipec Plastithane. A variety of colors, including
netallics, can be appliad. Thie thoroughly seals ond weatherproofs the structure.
SHGINES :
Porhops the most. interesting feature of Jurea's Mustang is the adaptability
of Canadian Rambler auto engine of 125 to 160 hp. or Cl Buick F95 aluaintm block engina.
These engines ware produced batwean 1962 ond 1964. At the time of writing these engine
conversions have been only generally designed and the actual details are not yet dram
up. They use en aluninua alloy block, henec, they are light enough for oixcraft in-
stallation. It wold be necessary to renove the cast iron heads, recast these in
aluninua elloy, and install valve seats and guides. at the front of the engine it
would be necessary to build q sisple gear box to reduce propeller rpm. to approxinately
half engine spced. This would pernit full utilization of the enginets high rpm. and
pover and permit better efficiency of the propeller. It would also align the. prop
correctly. The fully converted Ranbler. engine would weigh approximately 250 Ibe. plus
accessories, and the F85 approximately 350 Ibs. ~ Being in-line and liquid cooled, the
¥85 and Rambler would sound and run nuch Like the original lierlia. These engines
could use the éustin-lealy sports car aluninua radiator and in the some location as
the original: aircraft.
The most adaptable engine for thic aircraft would be tho Czoelcolovalian
Walter 6 111, 6 cylinder in-line ‘siz’ cooled engine. Also suitable would be the
4 cylinder 125 bp. Menasco, the 130 hp. 4 cylinder in-line inverted Gipsy Uajor engine,
and the 165 to 200 hp. Fairchild Ranger engine. There ara other eluminum alloy auto
ongines that could be adapted. However, auto engines are frowned on by FAA and DoT.
Jurca advises not to use euto engines unless the conversion is carefully engineered
and thoroughly prover.
Opposed cylinder Gontineatal and Lycoming engines of 125 to 200 hp. can be
installed in the WJ-7. To preserve the long nose and parait an authentic nose cowl,
2 propeller hub extension should be installed sintlar to that’used on the Piper, PA 30
‘Twin Conanche, It is. then possible to route the cooling air fron the scoop, up over
the cylinders, dow between cylinders and out the bottom via a cowl flap. The cowl
sides are slightly bulged to enclose the engine width of about 33".) Industrial Airport - Edmonton - Alberta - Canada
25-11-69.
‘The first Jurca Vustane was built from the first kits for tail, fuselage and wing.
that Faleonar Aircraft Limited produced. Tt was built by a group including Herman
aston, Bud Gillis, Chris Palconer,Fsed Gravee and Marry Ratay. Our 11J-7 started in
the fall o£ 1967 and conplered in July of 1969, Construction of the wood work,
fuselage, tail, wing went quite quickly. Although the wing woodwork tosk as much
tine as the tail and fuselege conbined.
Ye stuck very closely to the plans although quite « few improvements and deluxe
items were installed. Although it tool a little oxtra vorle and material, we chose to
use the speed nods aupplenental plans to close the control surface gap im the teil
and for the ailerons, We also buried the flap controls in the wing. The basic tiJ-7
plats shev very simple system of control system attachment, while the speed mods
Snvolved a little more work, We used a modified ving air foll section which reteined
‘a constant leading edge radius Erom the root end to the tip. The apperance of the
tip is aloost droop dom, This vas incorporated to insure that the wing tip would
not drop during the stall.
We felt that the charceteristice of the air scoop might cause considerable drag
nd therefore elecrad to have it 28 a removeable item. 1t also has quite < %:
compound curves end its fabrication out of fiberglass would be necessary, #0 we ended
up with the removeable belly air scoop. Yerformance tests later on showed that there
very little extra draz with the aiz scoop installed. In Ganada the gress weight
is Limited to 1500 Ibs. ‘ith the belly aix scoop removed this allows quire a bit of
extra fuel to be carried for 2 Longer range.
Since Jurca leaves the instrugents, controls and epekpit layout to the builder,
we drew up plans for the installation of the imstrunent panel, 2 removeable windshield
bly permitting access to behiné the instrumenc panei and the various control
boxes end small panels required for the electrical system, tab controls, ete. fe
decided to use quite an exotic electrical system so that the main undercarriage and
tail vheel could be retracted casily. This electric retract systen worked very voll.
Gurca!s plans show a fixed call wheel and a munvally operated main undercarriage
retraction, The tail wheel retract motor is a sinple automobile car seat motor.
The nain andereatriaga retract motor is especially modified reversible type.
Jso features another little seat motor to operate the

Th response to muny enthusiasts vho want an even larga version of the Mustang
replica, Harcél Jurca has just Einished the basic design er d'3/4 scale Slustang. Tn this
configuration the entire structure ie almost identicel to the standard 2/4 seale sixcraft,
except for tho fuselage and minor changes in the wings and tail. The fuselage structure
is designed so that there is nore comfort for the second occupant. In the standard
Version the second person has rather restricted space, and Jurce has recommended that it
be coneidered a single seater.
The wing consteuction of the {W~77 varies basically only in tho slightly inereased
size and mothed of mounting the eilexona. The eileron hinges are now supported on steel
tube through the mein sper and auxiliary spar. for the fuselage Jurca bas reverted to
the same type construction as with the iJ-G HY 190 replica and iN/-10 Spitfire replica.
This consists of a series of oval formers and bulicheads cut from heavy plywood and
assenbled vith four-major stringers. 1/3" to 3/4" plywood ts used Cor covering,
Two interesting v: also shown on this set of plans, A steel cube
fuselage fraze is shown, che same all wood tail and wing components are adaptable. thi
steel tube frame is completed with tvo Fiberglass shells, one for each halt of the
lege, Those aro full length from the Firewall to the rudder, Faiconar Aircraft can
supply the welded-up Erace, wile the fiberglass shell will be available fron Jim Carter
in the U.s8. ‘those honebuildere who axe okillod at aircraft sheet metal and have the
appropriate tools at their dispesal including a crown roller can replace the fiberglass
shells with alusinuz alloy sheet as an alternative coustruction covering. Actually,
there are very few double curvature pancls.
Also included io the vustang plans exe the cockpit and fuselage variations of
the P51¢ and P512 carlicr liustang models. These are the ones that saw the most action
in World War Ti, meny of which were flown by the Canadian and british airforces,
We feel that Jureato cstimated performance and data deserves some modification
in tho light of the standard 2/9 scale construction and other preliminary estimates we
have made in dotng the structure. It derably heavier aireraft than
the standard J-7. While Jureate astimred ompty waight is 1200 Ibs, we feel that this
will be 1400 or 1500 Ibs., requiring a cross weight of nearly 2000 ibs. This makes it
out of the question for cinstruction in Canada eccording te the present mules for home-
quilt aizeraft, restricting tae grosa woight to 1500 lbs. Yor 1.5. builders this should
be an excellent aizplane. While additional wing erea would improve takeoff and climb,
tais will probably be negligible in view of che considerable additional extra weight.
The saue power range engines are allowed ~ 120 hp, miniuum to 220 bp. maxi
