HDF 190: FLITE (FIRST-YEAR LEADERS INSPIRED TO EXCELLENCE)

URI MINOR IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES, CENTER FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

CORE REQUIREMENT FOR THE LEADERSHIP MINOR

LEARNING CONTRACT

Goal: To identify and utilize my Strengths in an organizational/interpersonal setting that

aligns with the mission, vision, values and sponsored programs and activities of URIs
Center for Student Leadership Development.

Activity: (Detail your plan here)

I was a day host for D.R.I.V.E.s Multicultural overnight program. D.R.I.V.E is an
organization on campus that stands for Diversifying, Recruiting, Inspiring, Volunteering,
and Educating. For their overnight program they invite high school seniors to come spend
the day at URI then spend the night in someones dorm and go to welcome day the next
morning. Only seniors that have been accepted to URI and defined themselves as diverse
on the common app were invited. Throughout the day the seniors were able to have
lunch, ask college students questions, go to classes, have a scavenger hunt, a dance battle,
and more.
All my strengths make me a relationship builder. The Strengths I relate most to
are empathy, developer, and relator. As day host I was able to participate in activities with
the seniors and build a relationship with them. The day host were asked to come by
whenever they did not have classes. Luckily I was done with classes before the event
started so I was able to be there throughout the whole day. I was able to meet the seniors
when they got here and walk them across campus to where the event was being held. At
this time, I was able to get an insight as to how far these seniors were coming from and
why they decided to come to this event. After lunch we had about two college students sit
at a table with a group of high school seniors. As a college student I was able to ask the
seniors questions about their interests and then in return I was able to tell them amount
my life at URI. I was also able to tell them activities and classes that URI has and would
fulfil their interest. Another activity that I participated in with the seniors was the
scavenger hunt. For the scavenger hunt our group had two seniors and two college
students. Again with this activity we were able to get to know the seniors better. By
showing them around the school we were able to see their excitement for college
increase. The most memorable part of the day was seeing one girl all shy and nervous at
the beginning of the day, but I saw that she was by herself and went up to her. I was able
to have some good conversations with her to calm her down and have her feel more
connected to the day. By the end of the night she was talking to multiple people and
seeming to really enjoy her time there. I feel that if I did not go up to her, she wouldnt
have come out of her shell. The Multicultural overnight program helped me improve my
strengths in developer, by seeing that the seniors had the potential to feel connected to
URI, empathy, by understanding that these seniors were nervous to be in a new state with
random college students, and relator by thinking back to when I was a senior and
remembering how stressful and challenging this time is for the seniors. I was also able to
go out of my comfort zone and start conversations with people I didnt know.
