Advantages of Fly Ash Bricks
Fly ash bricks are produced with/ \
without frog. \
The bricks are uniform in shape and
size, therefore, require less mortar in
brick work.
Plaster thickness required will be less
compared to clay bricks, thus saving of
cement mortar.
These bricks are environment friendly as:
Tt uses fly ash, which is by - product of
thermal power stations.
Saves agricultural land which is used for
manufacturing clay bricks.
Less energy intensive compared to clay
bricks and helps in keeping clean
environment.
Can be manufactured at construction site

Ce UAL CRC OF+ Raw material required are fly ash- a by
product of thermal power station,
hydrated lime, gypsum, locally available
sand/stone dust and water.
+ Ordinary Portland Cement can also be used
in place of hydrated lime and gypsum.
+ Raw materials in the required proportion
are mixed in the pan mixer to have a semi
dry uniform mix.
+ Semi dry mix is placed in the moulds of
hydraulic/ vibro press.
+ Moulded bricks are air dried for one/two
days in a shed depending upon the
weather conditions and then water cured
for 14-21 days.
+ The bricks thus produced are sound,
compact and uniform in shape
Fly Ash Bricks
+ Awell- proven building material and can
be used as an alternate of burnt clay
bricks.
+ Bricks of comparable strength can be
manufactured.
+ Bureau of Indian Standards have issued
code IS:12894-2002 for ash bricks.
+ Use of fly ash bricks has been incorporated
in CPWD specifications.
+ In Dethi Schedule of Rate (DSR), items for
these bricks have been provided.
Mandate given in MoEF Notification :
+ Every construction agency engaged in the
construction of buildings within a radius
of 100 km. from a coal or lignite based
thermal power plant shall use only fly ash
based products for construction
+ Minimum fly ash content for Fly Ash bricks
and blocks to qualify as “fly ash based
products” shall be 50% of total input
material.
Examples of Use of Fly Ash Bricks
+ NTPC has manufactured more than 54
crores ash bricks in its various thermal
power stations and utilized in
construction activities.
+ NTPC Townships at Simhadri in Andhra
Pradesh, Sipat in Chhattisgarh, Faribadad
in Haryana and Talchar - Kaniha in Orissa
have been constructed exclusively with fly
ash bricks.
+ Fly Ash bricks are being used in NTPC's
power plant construction works at Rihand,
Unchahar & Dadri (Uttar Pradesh),
Talcher-Kaniha (Orissa) and Ramagundam
(Andhra Pradesh).
+ NTPC’s NETRA office building at Greater
Noida & 'D' Type residential quarters at
Township at Noida have been constructed
with only Fly Ash bricks,
+ IIT Delhi has utilized these bricks for their
cafeteria and Management School
building.
+ Greater Noida Development Authority
have used these bricks in office building
construction.
+ Large number of houses are being
