The Complete Guide to IELTS; Students Book Band 5.

5-7 by Bruce Rogers and Nick Kenny

is a valuable resource which would well serve as a course book for schools offering IELTS
examination training. The book includes sub-skill specific (reading, writing, listening and
speaking) lessons ready for classroom delivery.

Typical IELTS topics are covered in the book including the environment, arts, sports and
culture, with the texts included having more substance than many language teaching
resources on the market, no-doubt this is part of the advantage of being published by National
Geographic. Given its thorough treatment of the academic reading and writing modules with
sub-sections on vocabulary knowledge, describing figures (charts, graphs and plans), and the
use of cohesive devices in extended writing, teachers preparing students for IELTS academic
will find this publication particularly useful.

There is a complete practice test at the end of the book and additional practice items in .pdfs
on the accompanying DVD. The authors have gone beyond compiling practice test exercises
with the inclusion of strategic components on IELTS tips and tactics whereby approaches to
IELTS tests are discussed and evaluated in group work activities.

The final section of the book includes assessed and banded writing tasks as well as two video
recordings of practice spoken IELTS tests. These will prove useful not only for students
aiming to develop a better understanding of what is expected of them to reach the scores they
need, but also as standardisation examples for staff teaching into IELTS preparation courses.
