The Castillo de San Marcos played a number of roles since it was built in
1672. It is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. The fort
was build by the Spanish initially but then was taken over by Britain in 1763.
The fort has changed possession 6 times, all in peaceful ways but has a great
deal of American history stored in it. There are guided tours daily of the fort
as well as the surrounding city of St. Augustine which is considered to be the
oldest city in America.

The Museum of Florida History

The Museum of Florida History has a number of permanent, temporary, and
traveling exhibits that you can use. Professionals from the museum can
travel to be in your classroom with you to speak or bring traveling exhibits
along with them. In addition to the exhibits, the Museum of Florida History
website provides online resources for teachers and lesson plans that align
with the exhibits and grade level standards. Whether you take a field trip or
bring the museum to your classroom there is a great deal of information that
is valuable to the teacher and students in Florida.

The Florida Historic Capitol Museum is a museum that houses artifacts
pertaining to the government in Florida. The building used to be the Florida
State Capitol Building but has been changed into a museum since the new
Capitol Building was built in 1970s. This museum provides resources relating
to the voting process and even has one of the punch-ballot machines that
cause a huge controversy and recount of votes in the 2004 presidential
election.

The Florida State Capitol provides guided tours to large groups. In addition to
large group guided tours, there are self-guided option at the Florida State
Capitol. There are galleries available for people to watch the House or Senate
session. Since the sessions are open to the public, it provides a great
learning opportunity for students to see the government in action. While at
the Capitol you can also make appointments to meat with people like the Ag.
Commissioner and other representatives in the state.

The Florida Supreme Court offers a number of opportunities for educational
purposes. Students are able to sit in on oral arguments, participate in Mock
Oral Argument Tours and participate in a Justice Teaching program. The
Justice Teaching program was initiated by Florida Supreme Court Justice R.
Fred Lewis. The goal of this program is to pair a legal professional with every
elementary, middle, and high school in Florida to further law-related
education in the state.

Florida Governors Mansion

Visitors are welcomed in to the Florida Governors Mansion which is
affectionately called the Peoples House of Florida. During tours, guests are
taken through the home with an official curator or volunteer to teach about
the history in the Governors mansion. Admission and parking are both free.
Groups of 10 or more are asked to make reservations at least 2 weeks in
advance.

This is the tallest lighthouse in the state of Florida. You are able to climb all
203 stairs to the top of the lighthouse. There is also a museum with has
exhibits on the United States Lighthouse Service and its airways division,
Daytona Beach and Florida history. The lighthouse offers guided tours daily.
Admission is $6.95 or adults and $1.95 for children under 11.

National Naval Aviation Museum

The National Naval Aviation Museum provides tours daily of the museum.
They have programs designed specially for students K-12 grade. The
museum strongly supports stem learning but also includes historical aspects.
The tour guides work with the Florida curriculum to ensure that their tours
and fun for students and also benefit their learning.

The Tallahassee Museum has exhibits that represent Old Florida. The
Museum focuses on the Big Bend region of Florida. Exhibits include a Baptist
Church, a one room school house, a caboose and a reconstructed slave
cabin. The museum is a restored plantation house that provides history in
itself.

The Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse in the United States is located in St.
Augustine, Florida. The schoolhouse was built while Florida was controlled by
Imperial Spain. There was only one teacher who lived upstairs. The school
house has been maintained and is in the historic part of St. Augustine.
Admission is $4.95 for adults, $3.95 for students 5-11. Visitors can view
original textbooks and materials that were used in the 1700s by teachers
and students.
