Making a Diorama
What is a diorama?
‘A diorama is a three dimensional recreation of a scene. Dioramas are designed inside of a box.
What materials do I need?
‘Asshoe boxis the only “required” material. You will also need decorative materials such as paints,
construction paper, scraps of fabric, scraps of collage paper, (gift wrap, wall paper, etc), stones, bits of
wood, pipe cleaners, sculpting clay, wool, etc.
Where do | start?
* Choose an event/scene from the Revolutionary War era.
* Look through your Social Studies book and additional resources to learn and take notes on
important details from the event.
+ Make a rough sketch of your diorama on a piece of paper.
+ Make a list of materials you will need to represent the details of your diorama.
‘+ Eliminate any distractions by painting the outside of your box or covering it with paper.
* Design the “background” of your scene directly on the inside of the box or on a separate piece
of paper that you can later glue into the box. Make sure you design background for the back
AND sides,
‘Create the “floor” of your scene using paint, felt, scraps of fabric, etc. (For example, green fabric
could be used for grass)
‘* Create three dimensional animals, people, or furniture from clay, pipe cleaners, spools, match
boxes, etc. Or draw them on a piece of paper and glue to a cardstock or Styrofoam base to help
them stand up.
‘+ Include your name and “Event” on the top of your box.
Neatness counts! Make sure you pay attention to the details. Are all of your corners glued down? Is
there any glue showing or smudges that can be cleaned up? Make sure you are turning in your absolute
BEST!Revolutionary War Era- Diorama
After Thanksgiving break, you will be working on an in-school project. You will be making a
diorama of one event/scene from the Revolutionary War Era. All work will be completed in
class, but you will need to begin preparing your ideas and gathering your supplies from home.
Some supplies will be available at school, but do not assume your teacher has something
without checking with her first. The attached
rections give further explanations and ideas for
your project, but remember ALL work will be completed in class. You may bring in materials,
and begin construction on November 28".
