Chapter 1: Broadway

Human arts always interested me, in some ways more than my own race.
Their use of costumes and acting and scenery amused me to no end. I frequently
attended, what was it called? Broadway, I think. Whatever the name, I found them
enticing, viewing a play at least once or twice every week. I had memorized at
least 12 of them, and recited them many times when I had free time.
I went to a classic one morning, Annie, I believe was the girl's name, an
amusing, witty story about a red haired girl living in an orphanage, with minimal
information about her parents and biological family. I had been following a certain
actress, one of my favorites, when it seemed that something had happened to her
and she was unable to perform in the show.
Thus, the actress was changed, and I was curious to see how this actor
compared to the previous one.
9:00 AM, I arrived at the theater, took my seat and the show started. The
play progressed normally; I quietly hummed along to Hard Knock Life,
watching the play as I usually did. The actors played their parts well, including the
new actress, a skinny black haired girl, who was relatively quiet but acted like a
natural. The audience laughed when the childish jokes were said, I just smiled and
chuckled quietly, knowing every one they said all too well. Everything was normal,
as a usual play would progress.
The black haired actress was singing through a song, near the front of the
stage, when she appeared to twist her ankle, and fall over the side.
The audience gasped, and the few hundred or so people in the hall stood to
see if she was alive.
She had hit her head on the floor of the hall, and blood was leaking onto the
ground. Not profusely, but enough to cause hospitalization. I stared at her
questionably, the fall wasnt an accident, she had forced herself over the side of the
stage, as if an act to injure herself. Which, obviously, had succeeded.
Multiple people rushed to her side, other actors and civilians alike. Checking
her pulse, mopping up the blood, dressing the wound. Simple things.
A voice on the loudspeaker came on, telling everyone that Everything is
alright. The actress has a minor injury and an ambulance is on its way. The show
will be postponed to a later date, and everyone needs to leave the hall in an orderly
manner, or something along those lines.
People slowly started to shuffle out of the hall, making comments about I
hope shes okay or I wonder what happened?, occasionally glancing back at
her.
I stayed in my seat, along with a few others around me. Possibly, others had
noticed that the injury wasnt an accident, and they stayed near to see what the real
reason was. A few people conversed about how it might have been an act of public
suicide, which I nodded to; it seemed like a likely possibility.
The loudspeaker turned on again, telling the remaining people to leave the
hall, as the show is over. A few people left, but others stayed, including me. I
wanted information about what happened. The loudspeaker didnt play again.
The faint sound of an ambulance was heard outside, and six members
dressed in uniforms and a stretcher rushed into the hall and asked around at what
had happened. They all wore small masks. One seemed to glance frequently at me,
I watched him with close eyes.
They loaded the girl onto the stretcher; the man was now staring at me, not
worrying about secrecy any more.
They started to move her out of the hall; I stared back, straight into his Dark
eyes. Too dark.
I stood, recognizing what this man was.
A gunshot fired, the man had pulled a firearm. Three shots were fired, all
aimed at me. The men in uniform pulled the girl off the stretcher, and yanked her to
the ground. I flipped back over the chair and landed in the row behind me.
Three more were fired, two civilians were hit, they screamed and fell to the
ground. Someone was talking to the police on a phone.
I ran into the center aisle, and charged down at the man, he fired two more
shots, I quickly dodged each of them.
He pointed the gun down at the girl and screamed Stop!
I slowed down and stood still, 6 feet away from him, he breathed heavily.
Take one more step, and the girls dies. You know who I am, and what Im
here for. I nodded silently. Youre going to come with me, or Im killing
everyone in this room, including you. I nodded again.
I reached behind my back and pulled out a small dagger, a tiny blade I
always kept with me. I smirked silently and charged toward the girl. A gunshot
fired. I focused my eyes; the bullet was flying toward the girls head, straight to her
eyes. I spun, swinging the blade near her, but towards the small piece of metal.
A loud tang, the bullet hit the blade and bounced off, flying into the ceiling.
I kept spinning, turning to face the man, and threw the blade, it piercing his
chest, he screamed and fell.
I rushed toward him and kicked the gun out of his hands.
Why do you wield a gun? You must be aware of the decree. He stared at
me in pain and anger, I reached down and pulled off the mask covering the bottom
half of his face.
He hissed and spat at me, I kicked him in the side of the head, and the rest of
his eyes turned as black as his pupils, Dark and empty. I shook my head, and pulled
up the leg on my pants, revealing a curved blade. You deserve death for your
crimes.
I unsheathed the blade, and drove it straight through his heart, his eyes
fluttered, and his screaming stopped. I shook my head again. They must know
they are being sent to death. I brought the blade down. His head rolled on the
floor.
I sheathed my blade again, and turned to face the doctors, they stared back in
fright. One word. Leave. They all ran out of the hall, screaming, seeming to
forget about the injured girl on the floor.
I kneeled next to her; she was unconscious, but starting to stir. I shrugged,
and picked her up. I walked onto the stage.
The girl's eyes fluttered open, as if waking from a deep sleep. She sluggishly
glanced around the hall.
Who What What happened? She glanced at the dead body, and
screamed.
Quiet. Screaming wont bring him back. She squirmed in my arms, so I
dropped her. Her screaming stopped when she hit the ground.
Ugh Whats with you? Ow She pushed herself into a sitting position.
Who are you?
I stared at her, then listened quietly, the sound of voices outside the room.
Police.
Thats not something that I have time to explain. You can either stay here
and be interrogated by the police, or come with me. Your choice. I reached a hand
down to her, and stared at her quietly.
She said nothing for a while, and stared at my hand, debating what was
right.
She reached up and took my hand; I pulled her onto her feet.
Anywhere is better than here, I guess. She stumbled and I caught her.
Easy, from that fall I doubt you can stand. I picked her up again. She
didnt squirm this time.
Now what? she asked. I looked around the room, but said nothing. I
reached up to my ear, and flipped the switch on the small intercom.
Shows over already? My, that was quick. A voice said in my ear, I chuckled
to myself.
No, there was a bit of an interruption. Im going to need a pick up, if you
dont mind. I said outloud, seemingly to no one in particular. The girl gave me an
odd look.
Done with New York are we? Shame, Ive enjoyed it. Her voice had a hint of
sarcasm, as usual. Where to? We could try Europe, or maybe Asia. Ooh ooh, can
we go to Japan? Im so intrigued by their culture. I shook my head and thought for
a moment.
Very enticing, but I think its time to jump. There was a pause, silence
coming from the earpiece.
Hyper-drive cores are on and charging. Arriving at the back of the theater in
2 minutes. She said suddenly, then again, silence.
Are you talking to me? She questioned, I didnt answer, but listened
intently for the police I had heard earlier. I stared at the door, waiting for something
to occur.
The door burst open, breaking partially from the foot of the policeman now
charging in. Five more followed behind him, armed with pistols. They spread
throughout the room, focusing on the enemy on the stage, eventually stopping and
creating a perimeter around us.
Do not move! We will not hesitate to fire, put the girl down, and face us
with your hands in the air!
My eyes darted from each officer, taking note of each firearm locked onto
me.
Is there an exit in the back of the stage? I asked quietly, but I could tell she
didnt hear me, as she was entirely frozen in fear. Girl, is there an exit in the back
of the stage? I asked louder, shaking her. She took a sharp breath, and looked up
to me, eyes filled with terror.
Ye Yes there is. Its on the f the far left. She stuttered, pointing
weakly. I took a slow step backwards.
Quit moving asshole! Take one more step, and well blow your head off!
Ignoring their demands, I continued to walk towards the exit. The sounds of guns
cocking filled the air.
I said stop! We will open fire! Put down the hostage and put your hands in
the air! I locked eyes with the man as he spoke. I could tell he wasnt afraid to
kill, that I wouldnt be his first. I stopped.
Get ready. Im going to need directions once were back there, so dont
faint on me. I told her, barely a whisper. Her breathing was sharp and shallow, but
she nodded. I kept my gaze on the head policeman, my expression blank.
Now put her down, and- Before he could finish, I bolted. He was caught
off guard, so the exclamation of Open fire! didnt come til a few seconds later.
Gunfire echoed throughout the theater, bullets flew into props scattered around,
and the girl, miraculously, kept her composure. She looked around the backstage
frantically, occasionally yelling out Left! or Sharp right!, until we came upon a
long hallway; a door with a red Exit sign sitting above it.
The force of us barrelling into it caused the metal opening to violently slam
open, flooding Light into Dark passage.
My ship lay before us, the engines humming, the main entrance wide open. I
slowed down and looked up at the beauty before me. She resembled a human
fighter jet, and could comfortably hold 7-8 people, with room to spare. As I walked
by, the Light Insignia (A glowing symbol with a large circle in the center, and two
hook looking shapes surrounding it) radiated in the sun. I quickly boarded, set the
girl down in one of the chairs, and took my place at the main chair.
Jump us. Preferably before those cops see. I said outloud. As a response,
the ship rose into the air, and rocketed towards the sky, leaving orbit quickly. The
empty vastness of space surrounded us, and by the time I finally turned around,
after I knew we were set on course, the girl had fainted.
