Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Thisstudyinvestigatesanecdotalreportsthathavesuggestedadversehealth
effectsassociatedwithacuteorchronicexposuretojetfuel.
METHODS: JP8exposureduringthecourseofthestudydaywasestimatedusingbreathanalysis.
Healtheffectsassociatedwithexposureweremeasuredusinganeurocognitivetestingbatteryand
liverandkidneyfunctiontests.
RESULTS: Breathanalysisprovidedanestimateofanindividual'srecentJP8exposurethathad
occurredviainhalationanddermalroutes.Allindividualsstudiedonbaseexhaledaromaticand
aliphatichydrocarbonsthatarefoundinJP8.Thesubjectwhoshowedevidenceofthemost
exposuretoJP8hadabreathconcentrationof11.5mgxm(3)fortotalJP8.Thisbreath
concentrationsuggestedthatexposuretoJP8atanAirGuardBaseismuchlessthanexposure
observedatotherAirForceBases.ThisreductioninexposuretoJP8isattributedtothesafety
practicesandstandardoperatingprocedurescarriedoutbybasepersonnel.Thebasepersonnel
whoexhibitedthehighestexposurestoJP8werefuelcellworkers,fuelspecialistsandsmokers,
whosmokeddownwindfromtheflightline.
DISCUSSION: Althoughstudydayexposuresappeartobemuchlessthancurrentguidelines,chronic
exposureattheselowlevelsappearedtoaffectneurocognitivefunctioning.JP8exposedindividuals
performedsignificantlypoorerthanasampleofnonexposedageandeducationmatched
individualson20of47measuresofinformationprocessingandothercognitivefunctions.
