Continuity Editing

Continuity Editing is an editing process when you assemble

shots in to a sequence to create scene and creating story so
the audience understands the story.
For example, the revers shot which is the classic style of editing
between two people or objects, this where the matching eye
line comes in, this where it gives the effect that you looking
through the eyes of the character as you can see here .
This practises the 180 rule out and lines out the axis of action
where all of the filming or action if you would, is on one side so
you dont confuse the audience, as well as the 30 degree rule
where the camera should only change by 30 degrees to change
between character or objects , dont to this and it will be a jump
cut and will break the illusion of watching reality.

But it has been broken many times, but works as well at the
right place and time.

But to keep your edit on the terms of continuity you cant do it

without match on action, its where action continues through
shot creating a continuity editing and making sense throughout
the scenes, making it so the audience understands whats is
going on which obvious has been used in every film
Then we have the fade in and the fade out which is used either
to change the time of day or used to end a story so a new one
can begin.
It gets used in a lot of music videos and used
The wipe is also to change the scenes to a new part of the story
so it is kind of like turning the page to a new chapter, and has
been known best in Akira Kurosawa films and inspired George Lucas, in star
wars
Look familiar you can see Kurosawsa has used it to change from day to night and
Lucas has used it to ether change from the bad guys to the bad guys.
This bring us to the dissolves which can be used in so many ways, which can be
used where the location changes, to create emotion to a subject, or time is sped up
or slowed down, or there is relationship between visual images, and many more.
It has been used in most big films , heres a scene of Hitchcock film vertigo where
where he has used a dissolve from a high shot of the road to them in the car, if he
did not do this it would be an aouqied jump cut.

Now we get on with the match cut which helps to match two different elements that
will have a relationship or similarities between them as you can see here, for
example breaking bad is full of them though out the sessions, for example here with
the the tea bag resembling the licking pips, and pirate of the Carabine with Elizabeth
eyes from child to adult.
And of cause 2001 space odyssey with the bone changes to a ship meaning all it
takes is one apa to pick up a bone as a tool
Now we have terminology, which is important for filming, like setups, meaning where
you have set the camera to film a scene.
Or takes depending on how many shots you take to get it right, then you with the
takes you have to pick the right shot that you think will work, then you go on to the
scene which is selection of shots that makes a scene.
Then you make sequence, which is a selection of scenes to create a sequence.
And Finally we have the rushes which just raw footage and unedited footage

Alternative editing
alternative editing has different styles to continuity editing and are manly used
to break the effect of reality and make the audience aware that they are
watching a film for example the new waves create these.
A major style is montage that has been used though out film and TV.
Montage is where unconnected shots are spliced together creating series of
images creating symbolic meaning and can be used for a chaotic effect
comedic effect and is used to speed up time for example team America where
they have used montage to speed up time instead of having to watch probably
months of training which would just not work and the beginning of watchmen
were we get the history of the watchmen so you under stand were they came
from how long there been around and how they have changed the history of
the world.
And don't forget the montage from the godfather which showing how Michels
character has changed and has become more roofless then his father, mixing
life and death in the same montage creating a powerful effect to the audience
and the story.

New waves
the new wave has techinqes have come from all over the world. The new
wave is where the rules of continuity editing has been broken on perposs
create visible editing showing the audience they are watching a film
examples of who did this would be the French new wave in breathless
where they have used jump cuts and the

slow motion and sped up footage

speed up footage is used to explain events in quick time and is used
most of the time for comedic effect since its a lot more unrealistic then
slow motion , examples are Benny hills has used it here since it makes
the characters look a lot more goofy than if you just had them in normal
time
however slow motion will most likely be used for emotional effect and
lets the audience see something that might be to quick for the normal
eye to see or let the audience appreciate the image.
As you can see here from the 10 parts seris the pacific where it goes in
to slow motion which is sort of a warning something bad is going to
happen as time is slowed down and you are forced to watch John
Basilons has he dies on the beach and the chose around him, creating
more of a emotional effect and a real shocker

split screen
Split screen can be used in many whys, it can be used for two
events to unfold or different versions of echother and it can be
used in montage two show scenes happening at the same
time .
500 days of summer has good example to line out reality and
expectation , and Thomas crowns affair has good use of spit
screen giving zoom in effect like your watch though the
telescope of the audience here, and it gives it more of a
dramatic effect with not just one but multiple screens so we
know the reaction of the people in the stadim and whats
happening on the field.
Also there is speed ramping where slow motion and speed up
can be put together and create a rhythmic pace which is used
in a lot of action shorts and has been used notably in 300 and
the matrix , they have used this to create more of a dramatic
effect which will keep the audience engaged.

Freeze frames
freeze frames are a still image of a shot and force the audience to look a
frame that is userly critical to the story.
For example the ending to butche cassity and the sundowns kid when
they make a final blaze of glory then the scene freezes and we are left
with the sound bullets , and it gives a clear message of what has
happened with out them showing them take a blaze bullets

Superimposition
superimposition is when two images or more are used at the same time,
this is often done by layering one on top of the other , and are userly
used to suggest that there is a connection between them.
The intro to both sessions of true detective are a great example and give
a clear idea of what the theme will be about if you watch closely.

No or limited cutting to close ups

no or limited cutting to close ups are either used to make the audience
apueate a shot or see the full picture of what is going on, it can be used
to make the audience uncomfortable and claustrophobic as well it is
supposed to make the audience think twice about what they're seeing.
Scenes like theses make you spot every little detail and most commonly
will be filmed from a long shot or an extreme close up.
For example there will be blood is full of them and makes you see how
empty there location is, as well as children of men has some really good
ones, for example this scene when they get attack in the car , it gives an
uncomfortable fill and makes you fill like youre a passenger in the car.
These gives the scene suspense and would work the same way if it had
cuts in it, because that make it fill more like an action fill instead of a
suspenseful trying survive from being killed.
