The Positive Behavior Support Plan requires that I demonstrate competency in the ability to assess student behavior, determine its impact on school success, and design, implement, and evaluate supports that positively affect student behavior. This assessment is aligned with CEC standards 1 (Learner development and individual learning differences), 2 (learning environments), and 7 (collaboration). My knowledge and skills in learner development and individual learning differences (CEC standard 1) were developed while completing this artifact. During the process of completing this artifact, I was required to get to know the individual student, his strengths, his needs, his functions of behavior and his learning styles. Through these aspects I was able to see the whole child, and use what I know about him to create a behavior plan and interventions that best meet his needs. I gained knowledge and skills in learning environments (CEC standard 2) while completing this artifact. While analyzing the individual students learning needs, personal strengths and functions of behavior, I learned how quickly one adjustment in the learning environment can change the comfort level of a student. I was able to make small adjustments, once the function of behavior was identified, to help to make a learning environment that supported the student, rather than frustrating him. The student I assessed was positively affected by my mastery of the standards. By completing this assessment, I was able to get to know the student on a deeper level, I gave him supports that he felt he could be successful in using, and I helped to give him more confidence within the classroom setting. All of these supports were put into place to help make this student more successful in his least restrictive environment. These skills and strategies he is practicing will carry with him for the rest of his life.
