пошану. Вона ставить їх у храмі для прилюдного
почитання. Вона поручає, щоб ми св. ікони почитали
вдома та - у формі хрестиків чи мeдaликів - носили їх
на своїх грудях.
Св. ікони зазнавали прилюдної і приватної почести у
Східній Церкві аж до володіння візантійського цісаря
Лева ІІІ-го Ісаврія (717-741). Під впливом двох
Єпископів з Малої Азії він осудив почитання св. ікон і
вважав Його за ідолопоклонство. Свою боротьбу
проти св. ікон почав від того, що наказав усунути
ікону Ісуса Христа, що була поміщена на брамі його
палати. А відтак 730 р. Він видав цісарсьний декрет,
яким заказав почитання св. ікон у цілій державі. Цим
декретом починається у Східній Церкві дoвгa, завзята,
болюча і Кривава боротьба проти св. ікон, знана в
Церкві під назвою іконоборства. Ця боротьба з
невеликими перервами тривала понад сто літ і
закінчилася світлим тріюмфом почитання св. ікон.
Цісарський декрет наказував св. ікони нищити,
палити, а їхніх оборонців в’язнити, посилати на
заслання і навіть мучити. Патріярх Герман І-ий (713-
730 рр.) не хотів підписати цісарськаго декрету проти
ікон і за те цісар його усунув та назначив патріярхом
послушного собі Анастасія (730-754). Римські папи,
найперше Григорій ІІ-ий (715-731), а відтак Григорій
ІІІ-ій (731-741), пишуть до цісаря листи протесту і на
своїх римських синодах осуджують боротьбу проти
ікон.
Цісар Костянтин V-ий Копронім (741-775), син Лева
ІІІ-го, завзято продовжував іконоборчу боротьбу
свого батька й хотів, щоби почитання св. ікон Церква
урядово осудила. В тій цілі 754 року він скликав
єпископів до Константинополя на собор, який під
його натиском заказав почитання св. ікон.
ОСУДЖЕННЯ ІКОНОБОРСТВА
Дозвіл на почитання св. ікон приходить за цісаревої
Ірини, яка 784 р. усунула з уряду іконоборця-
патріярха Павла, а на його місце казала вибрати
Тарасія (784-806). Він у порозумінні з цісаревою
Іриною й Апостольською Столицею скликав 787 р.
собор до Нікеї. Цей собор знаний у Церкві як Сьомий
Вселенський Собор. Пам’ять Отців цього собору
святкує наша Церква в місяці жовтні.
Собор у Нікеї за основу до свого догматичного
рішення щодо св. ікон бере науку св. Івана Дамаскина
(к. 675-749), великого богослова Східньої Церкви.
Собор виразно підкреслює ріжницю між почитанням -
адорацією, з-грецька латрія, яке належиться тільки
одному Господеві Богові, і між почестю і пошаною, з-
грецька дулія, що її віддаємо Преч. Діві Марії,
Ангелам і Святим. Собор навчає, що св. ікони це
тільки видимі символи невидимих осіб, що їм
віддаємо почесть. Почитаючи св. ікони, ми не
почитаємо паперу, полотна чи дерева, з яких зроблені
св. ікони, тільки віддаємо почесть тим особам, що їх
вони представляють. Почитання св. ікон Собор
ставить нарівні з почитанням св. євангелії, хреста й
мощів святих.

instituting the Sunday of Orthodoxy.
Origin of Iconoclasm
One of the striking features of the Eastern Church is the
ancient and special veneration of sacred icons of Jesus
Christ" the Mother of God, the Angels, and the Saints.
The Church of Christ deeply respects and honors the holy
icons as it also does holy relics. She places them in
church for public veneration, and recommends that we
venerate them privately in our homes, and wear small
icons around our necks in the form of little crosses or
medals.
Holy icons were accorded public and private homage in
the Eastern Church until the reign of Leo III the Isauriam
(717-741). Under the influence of two bishops from Asia
Minor; hostile to the worship of images, he condemned
the veneration of holy icons as idolatry. He began his
campaign against holy icons by ordering the icon of Jesus
Christ to be removed from above the gate of his imperial
palace. Later, he issued an imperial decree in 730
prohibiting the veneration of holy icons throughout the
empire. This decree marked the beginning of a long,
relentless, bitter and bloody campaign against sacred
images in the Eastern Church. This struggle with short
intervals of peace, lasted over a hundred years and ended
in a brilliant victory in favor of the veneration of holy
icons.
The emperor's decree ordered all holy icons to be
destroyed or burned and their defenders to be cast into
prison, sent away into exile and even tortured. The
Patriarch Germanus I (713-730) refused to endorse the
Emperor's decree against icons; consequently, the
emperor had him removed from office, and appointed in
his place the obsequious Patriarch Anastasius (730-754).
The Roman popes, first Gregory II (715-731), then later
Gregory III (731-741), wrote letters of protest to the
emperor and at their Roman synods condemned the war
against holy icons.
Emperor Constantine V Copronymus (741-775), son of
Leo the Third, obstinately prolonged the iconoclastic war
of his father and urged the Church to officially condemn
the veneration of holy icons. With this aim in view he
summoned the bishops in 754 to Constantinople for a
synod, which under his influence prohibited the
veneration of holy images.
The spiritual principles of stewardship are the founda-
tion of this Appeal. As desciples of Jesus, we are called to
receive God’s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly,
to share them lovingly with others and to return them with
increase to the Lord.

лікарні й бажає щоб священик його відвідав, просимо
повідомити про це парафіяльну канцелярію.
Федеральний уряд законом про втримання таємниці
(privacy law) , не дозволяє лікарній адміністрації
давати знати парафії. Це є відповідальністю паціента
або його родини.

parishioners and are thankful God has sent you to St.
Nicholas Cathedral. Please register by obtaining a
registration form from the parish office or emailing your

Confessions are heard on Sundays during each Liturgy
or by appointment.
Baptisms should be arranged through a priest at least one
month prior to the date of baptism. Parents and sponsors
must attend instruction prior to the baptism of their child.
Marriage: Couples planning to marry are requested to
make their arrangements early, but no less than six (6)
months in advance of the proposed date. Pre-marital
conferences must be arranged six (6) months prior to the
ceremony. At least one of the couple, or their parents
should be registered participating members of St.
Nicholas Cathedral for eligibility to be married in the
cathedral.
Sick & Homebound: If you or a family member are
confined to home and are unable to attend Liturgy either
temporarily or on a continuing basis, and wish to receive
communion, please notify the parish office.
Hospital Stay: If you or a family member are admitted
to a hospital for any reason and wish to have a priest
come to visit, please notify the parish office. Recent
federal privacy laws do not allow hospitals to notify the
parish if you are admitted. It is the responsibility of the
patient or family to notify the parish office.
The New Star is our monthly eparchial newspaper and
has information from all our parishes as well as from
Ukraine. The subscription cost is only $20.00 per year
and should be paid in the parish office.
