Map Key to Determine Distance
Instructional Focus
What do I know about my students that will inform this lesson?
Students are supposed to understand how maps work and distances as well, so we will be doing this
quick mini lesson so that they can plot the physical journey in Leviathan and determine the distance
traveled between all of the different countries. Based on a PRE-ASSESSMENT, it was noted that not all
students had this knowledge.

How does this lesson connect with and build on the previous lesson(s)?
Students will tie this into math by creating a path along the way and determining the distance between
points and the total distance between ALL of the points.

Standards Addressed
Common Core/Georgia Performance Standards
MM1G1. Students will investigate properties of geometric figures in the coordinate plane. a. Determine the distance
between two points. b. Determine the distance between a point and a line. c. Determine the midpoint of a segment.
