Poem
With fading scars and upturned smile
You rode waves and conquered storms
That graying hair and wrinkled face
Tell a story all their own

With many tubes and different monitors

You still laugh and make jokes
That hospital bed and white gown
Will not diminish the spirit within

With your children and grandchildren gathered

You try sitting and show strength
That is gone and wont return
A tear rolls down your cheek

With day gone and stars shining

You breathe slowly and try again
That little light and an angelic voice
Beckon you to a warmer place

Flash Fiction
Get up Marcus, ya ugly oaf! Its yer wedding day! Edgar shook his brother
awake. You drank too much at the pub last night Dun know why a beaut
like Amelia would wanna git married to you! Edgar scoffed. Marcus
mumbled under his breath and before Edgar could react a large fist directed
at his face shot out from under the blanket. Edgar stumbled to the floor. You
dinnit ave to do that!
Yer just jealous Edgar. We all know that Amelia spited yer wooing Ifn
thats what ya wanna call it, the mens father mocked. Now hes right
Marcus, you need to git up now.
Marcus grumbled and rolled himself out of his cot. The blanket dropped
revealing Marcus in all his glory.
Oi! Git yerself covered ya lout! Marcuss father shouted. Marcus grabbed
his trousers off the floor and struggled to put them on.

Marcus stood next to his father and brother, all dressed in their least stained
shirts and breeches. The crowd was small and the bishop old, but the
moment Amelia walked down the aisle on her fathers arm would take
anyones breath away. Marcus grinned at this beautiful woman. I mus be tha
luckiest man in tha world! he whispered to her. Amelias striking green eyes
lit up with joy.
And I the luckiest woman
The bishop read the vows in a monotone voice. If there is any who object to
the union of this man and this woman speak now or forever hold your
peace Edgar looked at the crowd expectantly. A man dressed in a dark
blue suit stood. Bishop, I object on behalf of Lord Samuel Whithington. The
man motioned to several men that had gone unnoticed at the back of the
chapel. They all wore royal livery. Please arrest this woman. The man said
coldly as he motioned towards Amelia.
Marcus went to move in front of Amelia, but she gently pushed him away. A
cold aura emanated from her person. The green eyes Marcus adored so
much were darker than the deepest night.

Lord Samuel has no power of me. Be gone! a guttural voice boomed from
Amelias small mouth. The guardsmen hesitated and looked to the man in
the suit for direction, but he stood no more, only his suit remained covered in
dust. Be gone! Amelia ordered once more. The men ran from the chapel
followed by everyone else except for one person.

Amelia relaxed her stance and almost instantly turned back into a normal
person. Marcus stared aghast at his, almost, wife. I What are you? he
stammered.
A queen of people long gone.

Flash Memoir
We had known each other since we were 5. He was my first boyfriend.
Those sweet blue eyes and the way he could make me laugh made me think
I was in love. This was the real deal. I imagined our life together, our kids,
our home, our 25 dogs! I couldnt wait for him to propose. I mean we were
already living together so that would have been the logical next step.
I wish I could have told you thats exactly what he did and that we had a
happy ending. I even wish I could just say I caught him cheating thats why
we went our separate ways. I constantly ask myself why I ignored the red
flags. They were pretty obvious, even at the time when they happened. After
so many failed relationships and them always telling me it was because I was
overthinking it I just shut down my fear and my concerns. Why couldnt I just
focus on the good?
He spent so much money taking me to that restaurant and all I wanted to do
was complain about how bad the food was. He made sure I felt bad about not
liking it even though I know he didnt like the place either. We went home
and did what he always demanded of me before bed. Thats normal isnt it
though? Were dating and living together I would try to reassure myself
with these words often.
His jokes progressively got cruder and Im sure he pushed the boundaries of
my PTSD just to see my reaction. I think because I tried to not react he
decided to be more aggressive about it. It started out with him tickling me
and then he pinned me to the floor. He kissed me hard, too hard, my lip
started to bleed and I started to cry. He let me go, but I knew deep down it
would get worse. Its okay, he was just messing around He came into the
bathroom and apologized. Those blue eyes and goofy smile melted my heart

all over again. See Nothing to worry about. It wont happen again. It wont
get worse.
But it did. I was wrong.
I didnt know until the next evening exactly what happened while I slept. I
really wish I could tell you that he cheated on me or that he just left and
stole all my money How I wish I could say that, but it wouldnt be true.
I knew I was pregnant so when he admitted to me what he did last night
while I slept I was devastated Disgusted. My roommates heard the
commotion and came to my rescue. That was the last night I saw him.
Two weeks later I lost the baby. I was relieved, but I played the heartbroken
mother.

Yesterday was the year anniversary. I still dream about the life I could have
had with him. When he was kind. When those blue eyes captured my heart.

Michael: See I drew those colors on my wall. It was too red.
DRT: Do you not like the color red?
Michael: No. My whole house was red And my mama wore red lipstick. I like
blue and white.
DRT: Tell me more about your house.

would hide there when people would come into my house. No one could find
me! *laughter*
DRT: *chuckle* Is that right? Why did you have to hide from people?
Michael: Because mama said that I had to. I dont like mama. She likes red.

Officer Emily Vargas looked up from her notes. Dr. Tomms sat opposite her
with a frown. The meeting room was covered with paperwork. Dr. Tomms,
have we found out exactly where this barn is? He couldnt have walked 20
miles without remembering where he came from Could he? The doctor
stood from his chair and paced around the room.
I am unsure. He acts and speaks like a child half his age. I dont think he
took in anything. His emotional and mental state has been stunted from lack
of human exposure. Robert thought about this child, no young man, that
had been dropped onto his lap. I will let you know as soon as I find anything
out Im actually due to meet with him in an hour so I best be going.

Case: 184
Session: 34
Name: Michael Ashley
Age: 16

DRT: Good morning Michael! I have an idea for today.

Michael: Whats that?
DRT: Why dont we go on a ride with Miss Emily today? We can all go on a
picnic. Would you like that?
Michael: You mean I can leave here and go outside?
DRT: Yes, would you like that?
Michael: Uh huh!
DRT: Alright then. Miss Emily is waiting downstairs for us now.
*end recording*

Michael sat in the back of the doctors car. He had the window down and was
sticking his hand out it. He was completely enthralled with the way the wind
felt on his skin. Officer Vargas sat next to him smiling. Suddenly the boys
face changed as if he realized where he was.
Doctor I know this place! See those are the mountains that I drew.
Michael then flips around and looks out Officer Vargass window. This is
where that man found me! Right here! Do you guys wanna see my house?

7| P a g e
Doctor Tomms and Officer Vargas shared a momentary glance. Why of
course we would Michael. Maybe then we could pick up all your blue crayons
so we can color together! Emily beamed.
The doctor followed Michaels direction to get onto a hidden road heading
away from the mountains. The drove for a good 15 miles before the road
came to a dead end. All they could see were rows and rows of corn. Michael
jumped out of the car undeterred. Robert and Emily followed as best they
could. It seemed like a never ending trek to get to where Michael was leading
them, but finally they emerged from the corn. There in the center of the field
was a small red barn.
Officer Vargas got on her radio and called in back up while the doctor and
Michael walked up the barn. There was an unlocked chain across the door.
Inside they could hear a womans voice cursing. Oh no Mama found out I
left Robert motioned for Emily to come over. The officer already had her
gun in her hand and was ready for anything. Michael watched the two adults
slowly open the door. Michael rushed inside the barn before either of them
could stop him. The woman inside yelped and a loud gunshot went off. Emily
and Robert ran inside to see Michael crumpled on the floor and a woman in
her 30s standing there wide eyed with a shotgun in her hands.
Robert fell to his knees next to Michael. The boy slowly turned his head to
look at the doctor with a bright smile that slowly faded. Robert realized the
floor beneath him was covered in a red liquid. Emily tackled the woman and
grabbed the gun out of her hands.
Oh god! Oh god! I never meant to kill him! the woman wailed. Emily
handcuffed the woman and brought her outside. Robert sat there staring at
Michaels lifeless eyes. There was so much he didnt know, so much he could
have done differently. This poor boy had lived a life of loneliness all because
of the color of his skin.

What is your name?

I My name? Its Madison Ashley Is Is Michael okay? I Im so
sorry
Madison Is Michael your son?
Yes I didnt mean I just didnt want John to know He would have been
heartbroken I was just so lonely And Ed He was always there for me
you know Its not my fault I had his bastard son Michael Oh sweet
Jesus What did I do?

Doctor Roberts sat at his desk staring at the file marked Case 184: Michael
Ashley. His hand ran over the massive red stamp indicating the case was
now closed. Sixteen years that boy spent in that barn. He was born there and
he died there, all because a lonely housewife couldnt stand her husband
being deployed to another country for a few weeks. The doctor picked up the
file and put it into his cabinet.
