Prompt 3

As a future teacher, I believe that the classroom and my teaching should be suited to fit

the needs of all students, including students with an emotional disorder/disturbance or ADHD. I

believe that it is the teachers job to learn about each student, including the disorders of students.

In learning about the differences and the needs of children, I am preparing myself as a future

educator.

In a classroom with a student with an emotional disorder/disturbance or ADHD, it is

important to first get to know the child and the childs condition. I would do this by talking with

the child, talking with the parent(s), talking with the counselor, and doing research on the childs

condition. To help this child, I would follow the tiers of response to intervention for students

with emotional and behavioral disorders. I would work with the students RTI committee/team to

discuss what would be best for the child and what I need to do for the child. As a team, we may

come up with a behavior plan, if necessary.

Other things I might do as a teacher for a student with a behavioral or emotional disorder

are things like linking assessment data of the students behavior with interventions,

implementing interventions across settings and placements, and providing a range of

interventions for improving behavior (Vaughn). To create an appropriate emotional environment

for this kind of student, I will respond to students feelings and intentions, listen to the student,

develop a positive relationship with the student, establish rules and consequences, consider
changes I can make to help the child feel more comfortable, catch the student displaying positive

behavior, use humor to build a relationship with the student, and create an emotionally safe

classroom environment (Vaughn).

As a new teacher, there are many things I can learn about including students of special

populations in my classroom. I think the best thing I can do for all of my students is continue to

learn and grow as an effective teacher for all children.
