Ringing in the New Year in February?

Baylors Asian Student Association celebrated the Chinese New

Year with the Baylor and Waco community Friday, February 3rd, in the

Bill Daniel Student Center.

The ASA rang in the Year of the Rooster and had the different

Asian organizations on campus provide different tables games.

Attendees played the games for tickets and cashed those tickets in for

various prizes later that night. Panda Express catered the event and a

performance by lion dancers (hyperlink to a video of the dance) ended

the night.

The celebration was amazing, said Leah Babaran, a sophomore

from Kansas City, Missouri and member of the Filipino Student

Association. There were many different people who came out to the

event, different ages and ethnicities. I loved how there was something

fun for everyone.

The festivities brought Asian culture to the campus and allowed

everyone who came out and participated to interact with a culture that

they might not have seen before or had not been familiar with. For

Baylors Asian student population, it was a chance to reflect on home.

The purpose of ASAs Lunar New Year is to bring a little bit of

Asias biggest festivity to the Baylor campus, said Duc Nguyen, ASA

president and junior from Garland, Texas. As Asians and Asian-

Americans, the event was a way for us to share traditions that have

been with us all our lives with our college peers.

There was a great turn out and many people reacted

responsively to the events of the night.

At the end of the day, I hope people walk away from this event,

not only with fond memories, but also with a taste of the richness that

is Asian culture, said Nguyen.
