Slice of Life

On Tuesday, February 7th, KWTX Assistant News Director Paul

Gately talked to Amber Adamsons Writing for Media Markets class and

shared his valuable experience and advice about writing stories.

The best stories are a slice of life, Gately said.

The most effective stories are ones that remind us that there are

interesting people in the world. Most of the stories that Gately spoke

fondly of were profile pieces that highlighted a member of the

community who might not have been widely known.

Gately also mentioned that the ability of sight is an obvious

necessity.

The ability to see is an ingrained talent but there is a necessity

to coax it out, Gately said. That is important.

The students responded positively to Gatelys speech and advice.

It was very truthful, said Callie Easley, a junior from Mount

Pleasant, Texas. Whenever youre reading a piece, you dont really

thin about it. And that can really draw you to a piece of news.

Along with the mantra given by Gately, he also highlighted that

having good writing skills, or the ability to acquire them quickly, is

vital.

That is the primary part of any media form writing well,

Gately said.

The combination of these two elements are done by many, but

done well by few.

Gately was an engaged speaker, and he encouraged questions

throughout his time with the class. He ended his time by saying that

any one of the students are welcome to stop by his office anytime.
