Emory, VA Long time Emory & Henry College Professor Rebecca

Buchannan has suddenly passed away early this morning..

Buchanan has been teaching at Emory & Henry College since 2003.

She was a loving wife and mother of three wonderful children.

Prior to coming to Emory & Henry, Buchanan was extremely successful

academically and athletically.

She attended Carroll County High School in Hillsville, Virginia. While

attending Carroll County High, she was an honor student all four years

and surpassed all competition with her amazing abilities in Track &

Field.

She was the Virginia State Champion and Record Holder from 1986 to

1988 and was also named the Virginia Timesland Athlete of the year in

1988.

After high school, Buchanan attended the University of North Carolina

at Chapel Hill on a full scholarship for Track & Field.

She continued to shine in Track while at UNC-Chapel Hill, breaking

multiple records and worked her way to All-American Status. She

graduated from Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology

in 1992.

After graduation, Buchanan decided to further her education by

attending graduate school at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

In 1994, she received her Masters degree in Sports Management with a

concentration in human performance and sports studies.

In the same year following grad school, she was selected to be an

intern with the U.S. Olympic Committee in Atlanta, Georgia. While

interning, she assisted with the planning and scheduling for Baseball,

Softball, Shooting, and Hockey competitions of the 1996 Centennial

Olympic Games.

Buchannan is top ten all time in the U.S. rankings for womens 400

hurdles, and Olympic Trial Finalist, and was a professional athlete who

was represented by Reebok, Incorporated at one point during her life.

Although Buchanan was blessed with extreme physical abilities, most

would agree that her willingness to work hard and help others is what

people are going to miss most about her.

She was a great lady, said Emory & Henry alum and former student

Malcolm Green. She was my favorite teacher at Emory, he claimed.

She was one of the nicest people I have ever met, said current

Emory & Henry student Brandon Self.

Whether teaching, coaching, or volunteering, Buchanan was all about

pushing for complete success throughout her life and wanted to spread

that type of energy to everyone she could.

Her favorite quote was one by Ghandi and it states, In a gentle way

you can shake the world.

And shake the world, she did.
