CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA
Monthly Report
Public Works Department
May 2017
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members

SUBMITTED BY: Mike Branson, City Forester

APPROVED BY: Chip Rerig, City Administrator

MARCH 2017 FORESTER REPORT

During the month of March, much of the forestry staff efforts were involved in addressing lingering storm
damage repairs and cleanup throughout the City. The on-call tree service contractors continued to be very
responsive and effective in attending to the Citys needs for emergency tree work and are finally able to get
back to some of the routine work orders for dead tree removals. Twenty public trees were removed this month.

Staff planted five new trees to replace several of the storm related tree removals.

In the North Dunes habitat restoration area, the contract biologist, Joey Canepa, continued planting new native
plants and removing iceplant and annual weeds. John Leys Tree Service, one of the City on-call tree
contractors, completed the first phase of removing dead trees, low cutting old tree stumps, and removing
acacia thickets under the direction of Ms. Canepa.

Forest, Parks and Beach staff continued to remove dead Myoporum, Acacias, and other vegetation along the
Scenic Road pathway and began the Citys annual weed mowing program. The late rains have extended the
active growing season for many of the annual grasses growing along our public right-of-ways.

Beautification Funds

To date, funds for beautification are being used for installation of new rod and cable fencing along the Scenic
Pathway, short-term repairs to the Scenic Pathway landscape barriers, revitalization of the Ocean Avenue
medians landscaping, contracts for removal of dead trees, stump grinding, supplemental tree watering, and
landscape design contracts with Scott Hall for the Scenic Road pathway and Joni Janeckis work at San
Antonio and Fourth.
