Observation Essay

Embassy Suites Denver, CO

The time was 7:23 p.m. (UTC), prefilled with excitement from the surprise of going to

Drake and Futures Summer Sixteen concert, I was in for another surprise as my mom and I

reached the 4th floor of the hotel where we would be sheltered at for the next 2 days. The 4th

floor was the lobby and main level, which possessed a warm ambrosial scent with a dim

scattered light pattern. The open floor plan produced a sense of belonging inside of me. A gallery

of soothing paintings, one of which had a splattering wide range of colors from blue, pink,

orange and yellow was attached to the wall behind the front desk. I detected a large glass

window that stood facing the skyline of the city standing 16 floors tall. Overwhelmed by the

fluorescent rays of sunlight that reflected off of my clothes, I gazed out throughout the city of

Denver. There were sets of fancy, brownish-tan colored tall chairs and round tempered glass

tables set up in front of this window for people to congregate and sit while they enjoyed their

food and beverages. I noticed signs that stated the directions for the cafe, swimming pool,

office, bathrooms. Several voices were heard on the main level as I quickly learned that 6:00-

8:00 p.m. was happy hour. I ran into the cafe and BOOM, an aroma of delicious smelling food

smacked me in the face. The food smelled like a concoction of spices. I glanced over where I

could see a line for the food that was being served and another line for alcoholic beverages. I

hastily jumped into the food line as I was curious to see what food was offered.

A short Caucasian woman stood behind me in line, my senses picked up that she was

staring at me and unsurprisingly she was. She tapped me and stated you are a handsome young

man I responded saying thank you! She then asked me What do you plan on doing in your

future? I told her that I wanted to become a dermatologists or an Olympian. Her eyes lit up with

excitement and responded saying those are some bright dreams, follow them and don't let

anyone block you from reaching them! She then exclaimed that she worked for the Department

of Corrections and was visiting Denver for her daughter's birthday. Inching closer to the table, I

picked up a plate and began placing the finger foods on my plate. I bumped into my Mom as she

gave me my room key and provided the information that our room is located on the 16th floor,

1625 is our room and here is the key. Our bags are being delivered to the room now. We then

sat in the tall chairs facing the tall glass window scrutinizing the skyline of the city. I reluctantly

thought to myself that this was one of the fanciest hotels I have ever stayed in.

The next day at 7:27 a.m. I once again sat in the lobby. I quickly learned that continental

breakfast was being served. The fresh scent of the bacon, eggs, pancakes, fruits, bread, along

with a combination of many other food gravitated around me. I sat at a table studying the people

around me. There was a multi-cultural diverse population. I noticed that several people had bib

numbers attached to their shirts and jackets similar to the bibs I wear running Cross Country. I

asked a tall dark skin toned man what the bibs were for. THE HOT CHOCOLATE 15k RUN!

he responded with much enthusiasm and went on to elaborate that the hot chocolate tour was

making their stop in Denver. The man had also stated that he has trained for 2 hours every day

for the past 7 months. I was blown away by the thought of his training. My mom joined me in the

lobby and my attention drifted out the tall glass window and saw a building undergoing

construction. The construction workers worked vigorously assembling the walls to the building.

Perhaps it was another hotel I thought to myself.

Retiring in from a long adventurous day of exploring the city, I stuck myself into the

lobby once again. I overheard someone say hopefully this is great performance. What

performance was the woman talking about I thought to myself? I noticed that I had just missed

happy hour. The time was now 8:08 p.m. and I had a longing desire to see what was going to

happen tonight in the very dynamic hotel lobby tonight. I glanced over to the tall glass window

and noticed a setup of what appeared to be a music stage. Twenty-four people sat enjoying the

last of their happy hour treats, adequately focused on the four men on the stage. We are here to

play a few selections of classical jazz a man exclaimed into a microphone on stage. I plopped

into a chair and attentively listened to the slow drifting music. I observed what appeared to be a

Hispanic man nodding his head slowly to the tunes. The astonishing look on the crowds faces

captured my attention. I then observed a sign that stated 5-star AAA hotel. Still overwhelmed

by the warmth and comforting setting of the hotels lobby, I sat for another hour listening to the

jazz band performs their calming melodies.

The 2nd and last day of our stay I sat in the lobby for the final time. The time was 10:42

a.m. and my mind began to wander around the mind blowing lobby. Breakfast was just beginning

to wrap up and I saw a signed that printed the words October Fest Weekend with a list of

events of the hotels entertainment for the weekend underneath: Trick Treats-Friday 6:00-8:00

p.m. , Jazz band- Saturday 8:00-10:00 p.m., Spooky Breakfast- 7:00-10:00 a.m. I saw the 4

elevators within the glass enclosure race up and down the 16 floors like a Yo-Yo going up and

down. I appreciated the diversity that the hotel offered. Being around people from different

ethnic groups and interactions with them articulated my emotions, thoughts and ideas and gave

me a broader outlook on society. I never had stumbled across any hotel lobby as dynamic, lively

and energetic as this one. I felt the energy through the people and the welcoming atmosphere. I

inhaled the ambrosial scent of the hotel for one last time and departed from the 4th floor lobby of

the Embassy Suites in Denver.
