Service Learning Proposal

Community Partner: I plan to work with refugees through the Catholic Community

Services of Utah. The Catholic Community Services of Utah deliver basic social services to

those in need along the Wasatch Front and Northern Utah.

Project Plan: I expect to provide refugees with assistance on the various hurdles they

would need to overcome resettling in a new area. Such assistance would include areas in case

management, job placement, health services, interpretation, transportation, housing, food

assistance, etc

My definition of civic engagement would be working in one's community for the purpose

of improving the quality of the whole.

Personal Culture: My culture would be an adult male, born in the bay area, composed of

nearly every regional race on the planet, ex-marine, and vagabond.

Culture Group(s): The refugees they work with are generally from one of the following,

Afghanistan, Bhutan, Bosnia, Burma, Chad, the Congo, Cuba, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Liberia,

Nigeria, Senegal, Serbia, Somalia, Sudan, Togo, the Former Soviet Union and Vietnam. Many

come from war-torn nations or are fleeing from political strife.

Challenges: obvious challenges will be language barriers.

Benefits: What I hope to gain from this is a greater knowledge on the inter-working of

the behaviors of various cultures.
