Visual Representation of Backwards Planning for this Unit

The Skill that Students must Master at the end of the Unit

The skill that I wanted students to display mastery of, were the use of rhetorical
techniques (ethos, pathos, and logos), writing for a specific audience, using
research and relevant facts to support argument, clear and organized writing, and
using effective presentation techniques and the use of technology to support
presentation. These were the skills that we had practiced throughout the semester,
and as a final project, this assessment would allow students to put all of that
together in one single large assignment.

The Assessments that will be used to gather evidence of mastery

Written proposal: The written proposal will assess for rhetorical techniques,
writing for a specific audience, using research and relevant facts to support
argument, and clear and organized writing.
Presentation of Service project: The presentation will assess their skills in
presentation techniques and the use of technology to aid presentation.

Instruction and Learning Experience

Students need instruction and background information on the Syrian Refugee

Crisis. They need to practice the skill of close reading to identify main ideas and
also need to practice the skill of summarizing a reading or video that theyve
watched. The skills have been practiced throughout the year, so its not
necessary to review too much, except possibly the rhetorical techniques. What
the students need the most in this unit, is the background information about the
Syrian Refugee Crisis. What led up to it, and what Americas role is in this crisis.
