Parts of instrument
a. Bars, nodes, resonators
b. Mallets
i. Core covered in yarn/synthetic material
ii. Can be soft or hard (soft for lower bars, hard for soft)
1. Lower bars are thinner and can crack easier
2. Holding the mallets
a. Same as snare drumthumb on top, in middle knuckle of
pointer finger
b. Grip with back fingers
i. Back finger fulcrum (will be explained further later)
3. Height of instrument/distance
a. Should be lower than belly button
i. Arms should be 90 degrees(ish)
b. Elbows should be in line with torso
c. Should be able to reach accidentals
4. Stroke
a. Must create rebound because there isnt any (with back
fingers)
b. Mallet heads are heavier
c. Play a little off center of bars, but over resonator
i. On center can crack lower bars
d. Demonstrate stroke with right hand/left hands separately
i. Must create rebound, make sure mallet comes up
ii. Mostly wrist
e. Play on D and G
i. Left hand on G, right hand on D
ii. Play at same time with both hands to match stroke
iii. Practice going from G to Bb on both hands
5. Excerpt
a. G minor scale (because piece is in G minor)
i. If have time
b. Start on right hand (Bb, Eb, F#)
c. Begin excerpt
i. Explain stickingwant to alternate hands
ii. Most convenient for open on top and bottom
d. Go slow!!!!
e. Break it down measure by measure if need be
