Lesson Title: Modernized Flashcards for Classroom Use

Context: With a focus on spelling and students will be introduced to a challenging story to read.
Together, we will discuss an overview of the article. Next, we will talk about what it means to
read effectively. It is important to teach this material for many reasons. Not only will it broaden
students vocabulary, but it will also provide students with healthy study habits and it will
encourage students to do research on future assignments.

Objectives: SWBAT read the text provided in class and understand it.
SWBAT exhibit better reading habits by using context clues and taking note of words they do not
understand.

State Standards: 5.1 Quote accurately to analyze the meaning of and beyond the text to support
inferences and conclusions.

Materials: Tablets, Quizlet app, story provided in class

Procedures: Introdution- we will start by passing out the story and reading it together as a
whole. Small Group- students will work within their small groups to read the story together and
stop at words they dont understand and highlight them. Collaboration- students should generally
have the same list of words. They will work with a partner to research what these words mean
and their part of speech. Independent Digital- students will individually put together flashcards
on their tablets in the quizlet app.

Rationale: Quizlet will aid in the students ability to learn because it will reintroduce an old
school way of studying to them. They will be able to use this app for years to study effectively. It
is also beneficial to students to be able to save their work and revisit it before tests or quizzes.
This app can be utilized in any classroom and can aid in teaching in any standard. It effectively
motivates students to study without them really realizing they are studying.
