ELICIT:

We will begin class with a PowerPoint that goes over each moon phase.
From this PowerPoint the student will learn all eight moon phases and
understand the cause of each phase.

ENGAGE:
We will engage the students by simulating a human solar system.
Giant cut offs of the (8) moon phases including the sun and Earth will
be given to 10 volunteer students. The student holding Earth will
remain in the middle while the 8 moon phases surround him/her. The
student holding the Sun will be standing to the left side of them
separated from the moons and Earth.

EXPLORE:
The students will explore their knowledge on the phases the moon by
representing Oreos with each phase. They will carefully remove the
top cookie and with a spoon shape the moon phases. For example: The
Full moon will be left untouched with the icing. On the other hand to
represent a Crescent moon the student will have to vigilantly remove
more than half of the icing with a spoon leaving the icing like a
backwards C.

EXPLAIN:
The students will explain each moon phase with 8 Oreos in the given
worksheet.

EXTEND: Students will be able to go beyond their knowledge by

answering the following questions:
What causes you to see the moon in these 8 forms?
When the Earth is between the Moon and the Sun it is most like a
_________.
Where does the Moon get its light from?
About how long does it take the Moon to complete its cycle?

EVALUATE:
To evaluate the learning from todays lesson we will go over the Oreo
worksheet to make sure everyone had the correct phases aligned (tis
will give them time to correct any phase that was incorrect). Also, we
will go over the answers for the 4 questions together as a class and
start a purposeful group discussion about how the Moon, Earth and Sun
all work together.
