Proposal | would like to research three specific facts about Serial Killers. Those facts would be aré serial Killers born, or made? Do serial killers have the ability to show empathy? And are all serial killers psychopaths? What-are-their triggers? Based off of my research with my 8 sources, | don't know that there is a yes or no answer to any of these questions, outright, but with a lot of other information and details | believe it can be dwindled down to a single answer. My argument is that a serial killer is both born and made because | believe it takes a bit of both to create a serial killer. | also believe that a serial killer isn't always a psychopath but that-etherthings-can-contribute-to-the desire to kil_or tae inabilly 1e-controlthe xiling- January 31, 2017 Assignment One Part | | would like for my semester-long project to be on Serial Killers. The definition of Serial Killer, a term coined in 1971 by former FBI Special Agent Ressler, is “a person who commits a series of murders, often with no apparent motive and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavior pattern.” | am interested in what makes a serial killer yearn to commit murder and what steps of action are taken to obtain said serial killer. The first known serial Killer, in America, was Dr. H.H. Holmes who confessed to 27 murders in the late 1890's. According to shallow research, there are 6 stages to a serial Killer's cycle: The Aura Phase, The Trolling Phase, ‘The Wooing Phase, Capture Phase, The Murder or Totem Phase, and the Depression phase. While there is no apparent single motive for a serial Killer to commit murder, there are several small motives that can be a trigger for any of the murders that they commit. The most common motives are Anger, Criminal Enterprise (benef in status or monetary benefit that is drug, gang or organized crime related), Financial Gain, Ideology (to further the goals and ideas of a specific individual or group), Power/Thril, Psychosis, and Sexually. According to the FBI's Crime Classification Manual (not taken directly from this manual) there are three categories that each serial killer belongs to: Organized, Disorganized and Mixed. While itis impossible to know if a child will grow up to become a serial killer there are at-least three signs that could be indicative that a child needs immediate attention: animal torture, prolonged bed-wetting and juvenile pyromania, these are called “The Triad” by Criminologists. The United States has the highest percentage of serial Killers, coming in at 76% of the world's total and out of these murders, 65% of the victims are women and the majority of the Killers are men. There are a number of prolific serial killers depending on where you are looking and what countries you are looking in. In Columbia you have Pedro Lopez who admitted to committing over 300 rapes and murders with only 53 bodies recovered. In Brazil you have Pedro Filho who was. convicted in 2003 for committing at-least 71 people, 10 of those being murdered before the age of 18, Between Columbia and Equador you have Barbosa who was accused of raping and killing at-least 150 young girls, confessing to the rape and murder of 72. He was murdered in prison, by ‘a cousin of one of his victims, before meeting his release date. In the United States, one of the most prolific serial Killers. Gary Ridgeway who was arrested for committing four murders, though he confessed to the murder of at-least seventy women in Washington, and avoided the death penalty by leading officials to the bodies of these women. A more recent case would be “The Long Island Serial Killer" blamed for the murders of 10 people, including women, men and children, and is still at-large. | am interested in determining what caused serial killers to commit the crimes that they do (motivation) and the steps that are gone into catching a serial killer. ‘While my topic may be a bit unconventional itis a topic that I'm very interested in and would be interested in for the entire semester. | look forward to finding out more detailed information, from the required sources, on the bare bone information that I've provided above. | believe that Critical Reading and Composing Process were used during this activity. | believe that Critical Reading was used because in order to write my summary I had to read information and analyze it and put it into my own words for the summary. Research is also considered Critical January 31, 2017 Reading which was done during this summary as well. The Composing Process was also used during this activity, It was used by using multiple strategies to determine my topic and what things | wanted to discuss within my topic, CHART:SEE ABOVE Criminal_Behaviour_- Free Will_v.
