Questions for Discussion and journaling

1. In my experience, the expectations set on a kid determine a lot about
how that child will chose to set their goals and their own personal
expectations. I have had positive and negative expectation set for me
and found that positive expectations can help a childs motivation but
can also prove to cause a lot of stress. I think children should be
encouraged to pursue their hobbies but set their own expectations and
goals.
2. The Indian children were expected to fail in the non-Indian world
which cause the children to not put forth the bulk of their efforts in
their interactions in the real world. According to Sherman Alexie the
children had the brain capacity to tell complex stories and understand
the material presented to them, but chose to fit in with the community
instead of becoming literate.
3. I think Alexies most important literary sponsor was his superman
comic book. Even though it was not a person trying to teach him to
read, it was the door to his literacy. Alexie did not need the guidance
most would to gain the skill of literacy but he manages to teach
himself through a short comic and a shared passion for books.
4. I think Alexie is trying to say that his passion for books was not only a
love for reading, but an escape from the expectations set for him.
Without books Alexie would not have the literacy skills he has obtained
and would therefore still be stuck in his unstable living environment. So
in Alexies eyes reading isnt just a passions but a bittersweet escape.
