Journal for Friday, March 10th, 2017

Today the number of students has gone down significantly due to the
suspensions that have been happening. The overall number of students enrolled at the
Academy is in the fifties and their max is mid-forties, so as Mr. J says, the fuller the
classroom the stricter the teacher meaning the students are getting away with less. Mr.
J comes in to each classroom to tell the students that there will be a guest speaker
coming in at 9:00 and that if any student misbehaves it will be an automatic weeks
suspension and their parents will be called, he lets the students know the speaker is
Judge Sloane, who is the judge that tried over most of their cases. Judge Sloane gave a
presentation on drug addiction and how it affects more than just the users. He had a
section on how children of mothers who used during pregnancy had problems past the
initial withdrawals at birth. Then CS, the child with ADHD and bipolar disorder, spoke
about how his mom abused pain killers and crack cocaine while she was pregnant with
him causing him to have a multitude of problems including having to have lung surgery
while still an infant. They dismissed the middle school kids right after the presentation
and kept the high schoolers for a deeper conversation with the Judge since most of
them were there for drug charges. He knew each one of their names without looking at
their name tags and said that he remembers each one of them because it breaks his
heart that they are resorting to drugs.
The presentation ended about 11:00 which is Mrs. Ms planning period, she goes
and had lunch with her husband who teaches at the middle school during that time so I
went on to lunch. The next class came in at about 12:00 which was BRs class, KJ was
now rotating with him as one on one help since we discovered after ISS that he
performs better when he has someone there with him, helping to provide a buffer from
the other kids. KJ is wanting to be a teacher, particularly AP so it is a little out of his
comfort zone, and since he has no actual classes he was the best choice to work with
BR on a regular basis. I still provided help to KJ when he couldnt think of a way to
explain to BR the topic. At the end of the day BR came in to the room and showed me
his point sheet, how this was the first time he never lost any points twice in one week.
