Check all Items against the packing list before discarding the shipping container and packing material. 2.2 Location ‘TRC-80 is a portable instrument which can be carried to any area of the plant cr used on the lab bench. It is operable over the ambient temperature limits of —10°C to 55°C. When working with R or S calibration thermocouples ambient temperature limits should be kept within ~1°C to 85°C. TRC-80 has been designed to be used in the flat position or on its side and is position insensitive 3.0 OPERATION 3.1 Start Up ‘As you will see using TAC-0 is extromely easy. To start up merely depress the On/Off membrane switch. The display will iluminate and you're ready to go. Upon start up you will be in the input mode, ready to read type J thermocouples in "F. In order to change to °C merely depress the “F/°C ‘mombrane switch, " 12 3.2 Thermocouple or Millivolt Selection Ag stated above upon start up TRO-80 will be in the input mode for type J ‘thermocouples. You'll know this because the LED annunciator over type J will be illuminated. But what if you want to work with another thermocouple calibration or milivolis? Merely depress the TC/mV membrane switch. When you do you'll hear a “Beep” and TAC-80 will switch consecutively to K, T, E, R, 5, B, mV and back to J. Each time you depress the TG/mV switch TRC-80 will Shift the selection one position. 3.3 TO/my Wiring To Input (or output) thermocouples merely attach the proper thermocouple | calibration wire to either TC1 or TC2 binding posts. OBSERVE POLARITY! In the thermocouple and mV positions red is the nogative lead, NEGATIVE (~) RED POST POSITIVE (+) BLACK POST 13, 3.4 Operating Mode Selection Selecting your operating mode from TC/mY, DC volts, milliamps, oF 3 oF 4 wire TD's Is simple. Upon start up the LED annunciator over TC1 will be illum nated. But, say you wish to input a 4 wire RTD. Merely depress the function button. You'l hear a“Beep” and TRC-80 will switch from TC! to TC2. Depress it again and you'll switch to DC volts and so on until you reach 4 wire RTO. You'll be sure you're in the proper mode by the LED annunck ator over each position. Youll also notice that the appropriate binding posts are located di rectly under the applicable LED. The following sections will de> | tall how easy it Is to “wire up” TRC-80, 3.8 DC Volts/Milliamps To input (or output) DC volts oF miliamps you must wire TRC-80 as shown below Remember to observe polarity. In this case red is postive, the exact opposite of thermocouples. VDC has input and output from the same terminal, POSTIVE (+) RED POSITIVE (+) DC VOLTS /O mA OUTPUT NEGATIVE (-) BLACK NEGATIVE (~) (CONEGATIVE POSTIVE (+) mA INPUT 15 3.6 RTD Wiring TRC-80 follows the international color code for RTD's. In the 3 wire form this Is rod, rod, white. In the 4 wiro form It is red, red, white, white. Merely connect, your RTD leads as shown below. Waite Waite RED RED 16 3.7 Outputs Up to this point we have primarily described TRC-80 input functions. However, TRC-80 has extremely useful and unlaue output features. To enter the output mode merely depress either the ZERO or SPAN membrane switch. You'll hear ‘a "Beep" and the LED annunciator will lluminate over the depressed switch. ‘You are now in the output mode. Before proceeding to make adjustments you should check to see that you have selected the proper TC, mV or other function and that you are properly wired. ‘This done, you can proceed to make adjustments. For arguments sake lot's ‘say you've depressed the ZERO membrane switch and wish to output the ‘equivalent of 0°F. By depressing (and holding in) the fast or slow increment “Aor docrement*w switches you can drive the display to the desired value. You won't hear a “Beep” when you depress these switches. The fast membrane switches, will drive TRC-80's display (output) up or down rapidly. ‘This is lke the old style coarse potentiometers. The slow membrane switches perform the same funotion .1° at a time, like a fine potentiometer. When the desired value is attained, release the membrane switch and TRO-BO is now ‘outputting the displayed value. » ‘A most useful feature of TRC-80 Is its ability to switch between zero and span points. In the above example we've set the zero point at O°F. Depress the span membrane switch. The LED annunciator will illuminate over SPAN. Now, for example, using the same procedure detalled above you can set in your span value, say 1000°F. When checking the calibration of instruments itis almost always the case that you will need to readjust your zero and span points a number of times, With 17 18 ‘TRC-80 this is very easy. Merely depress the ZERO membrane switch, O°F will appear on this display. Depress tne SPAN membrane switch, 1000°F will appear on the display. TRC-80 HOLDS IN MEMORY THE LAST ENTERED ZERO AND SPAN VALUES. Theres noneed to readjust cach time you wish to ‘check your zero or span. Should you wish to get out of the output mode and retum to input, merely depress the Input/return membrane switch 3.8 RTD Output In order to simulate the resistance output of RTD's it is necessary to use the TD output module which comes with TRC-80. Plug the RTD output module into the RTD terminal section of the membrane panel (See Figure 2). After wiring the RTD module to the instrument to be calibrated (observing polarity) depress either the zero or span membrane switch to put TRC-80 into the ‘output mode. By using the coarse and fine potentiometers on the RTD output module adjust the resistance equivalent of temperature desired. The display will indicate the proper temperature being simulated. After the desired ‘temperature equivalent is achieved on the display, flip the switch on the RTD ‘output module to "Output". At this point the equivalent resistance to the temperature displayed will be output. The display will indicate “HI, this is normal. To recheck that you are outputting the desired resistance for the required temperature fllp the switch on the RTD output module to its original position. The temperature reading will reappear on TRC-80's display. 19 20 3.9 TRC-80 with 2 Wire 24 VDC Transmitters, ‘TRC-80 can be used to simultaneously provide power to 2 wire 24 VDC transmitters and read thelr output on the display, Utilize the following procedure (See Figure 3) 41. Connact the positive terminal of the transmitter DC power Input to the red binding post of TRC-80's milliamp output terminals. 2. Connest the negative terminal of the transmitter to the black binding post of TRC-80's milliamp output terminals. 8, Set TRC-80 into the milliamp input mode. 4, TRC-8O will now supply 24 VDC to the transmitter and display the transmitter output (current loop value) on the display. 4.0 OTHER FEATURES 4.1 The Display TRC-80 contains a unique .75" high LCD display which provides complete ‘annunciation of operating modes. When working with temperature the display should indicate °F or °C. When working with milliamps TRC-80 will display “A” To signify millivolts or DC voltage TRC-80 will display “E". Additionally in the ‘event of an overrange or underrange condition TRC-80 will display "HI" or “LO” respectively. In the event of the batteries being too drained to continue TRC-80 will display “HELP” ‘TRO-80's display is two position. When used in the flat position itis possible to “lt the display only forward for easy viewing. To do this depress the button fon the side of the unit. The display will “tit” up. Pull the display panel to the front of the unit until It locks in place, To return the display to the flat position (this should always be done prior to putting the cover on), merely depress the button on the sido of the case and press the display panel down until it clicks In place. 4.2. 12 Point Thermocouple Selector TRC-80 has a switch selector avallable which can be used in the thermocouple input made to increase the number of thermocouples which can be simultaneously wired to TRC-80 (See Figure 4). To use, plug switch into either the TC! or TC2 terminals. Wire the thermocouples to the screw terminals on the switch, observing polarity, Select the proper thermocouple calibration by using the TC/mV membrane switch. Select the TC1 or TC2 position by using the mode membrane switch. By using the rotary switch on the face of either module it is now possible to select any of the thermocouples, ai 22. 43 wired to the module, The modules can be stored behind the display panel when not in use. Battery System TRC-80 Is powored by a rechargeable 6 cell, 12V nominal sealed lead acid battery pack which should not require replacement for many years under normal operating conditions. In order to charge the batteries use the line cord contained in TRC-80's cover. Connect the line cord to the receptacle in the side of TRC-80 and toa 11 VAC or 230 VAC source. Under normal conditions TRC-80's batteries can be charged to 90% of capacity in 8 hours and to 100% of capacity in 18 hours. Lead acid batteries have no memory effect so that ‘TRC-80 can be used on the bench connected to a 118 VAC or 280 VAC line without damaging the battery pack 80 minutes prior to TRC-80's batteries becoming too drained to continue to operate an audible “Beep” will sound, This beep will increase in intensity as TRC-80's batteries continue to drain. At the point where the batteries are too drained to operate TRC-80 will indicate “HELP” on the LCD display. At this time TRC-80's batteries should be charged, | | | 5.0 Calibration Check 5.1 Equipment Required 1. Precision Adjustable Milivolt Standard + 100mV.005% accuracy, .001 mV resolution.
