Effluent Disposal Guideline &

Standards
What are Standards?
The purpose of Standards is to protect both the
environment and human health
How? By defining maximum permissible pollution levels.
Techniques and methods of defining maximum
permissible concentration were originally developed by
occupational hygienists to protect those in the working
environment.
Similar methods were subsequently applied to identify
maximum permissible concentration in air, surface water,
soil, drinking water and food.
The basis on which a standard is set is a guide-line,
Guideline value
Guideline value is the estimated maximum permissible
concentration that would still guarantee a reasonable
health or environmental quality
Estimation is based on a critical review of all available
and relevant toxicological information, including data
on the fate and behaviour of substance in the human
body and in the environment
In addition to toxicological data, guidelines also
incorporate a safety factor
