OPTION B: FAMILY STRENGTHS

My familys big strength has been that we are always there for
each other no matter what. I think family is more important than
friends. Friends come and go but your family will always be there for
you. I consider my family to be my kids, my husband, my parents and
my siblings only.
I was born and raised in California. But my parents are both from
Mexico. I would be considered Mexican American. As, stated in the
book of Marriage and Family experience in page 100. Hispanic families
are very close to the immediate people but have also included their
aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents as well. I consider them to be
part of my family but due to conflicts we had in the past. I try no to get
too attached to them. Or consider them the most important people in
my life.
In the book they also stated that Hispanics tend to stay with their
parents until they get married. I have seen that in my family. I believe
that would be a true fact. My sister is currently not married and is 22
and living with my mother. My brother and I are the only ones out of
the house. She probably wont leave my mothers house until she is
married or has found that special person.
Marriage in our family is not very common. Almost all of my
cousins are not married. Or have been divorced. Marriage is not
something that we really talk about as well and feel like its a
requirement. My parents werent married when they were together and
many of my uncles and aunts are in the same boat.
Overall I feel like my family is very important part of my life. I
feel like I would like to teach my kids about marriage and let them
decide whether they would like to marry the other person or not its
okay to be with them for a while before you take the first step. I feel
like you need to live with the person first and realize how they really
are before you start to think about starting a family.
Another thing I think is important is that you need to enjoy each
other company before you start a family too. You get to do a lot of
things that would be easier without the kids such as traveling. When
you have kids it becomes harder to do because traveling could be very
uncomfortable for the kids.
Hispanic families seem to very united culture. It seems like its
always a family reunion when we get together for a party or for the
holidays. I just dont like that my family seems to always judge one
another and talk about each other. But I bet thats in every family.
Thats why only consider my immediate family members my family. But
I still love and care for the rest of the people in my family.
