MUTYA’S BOLDEST MAKEOVER

pageant has introduced many
innovations in the country’s
beauty pageant scene over the
last four decades. But the
changes it institutes this year
may be its boldest makeover
yet.
Mutya, one of the longest-
running national beauty
pageants in the country, is one
of the first to recognize the Fil-
ipino ancestry of overseas-based
women by allowing the partici-
pation of representatives from
Filipino communities abroad.
It is also the first national
beauty pageant to take the real-
ity show format on television
through the months-long Buhay
Beauty Queen program on ABC-5
in 2004.
And to further push its “beau-
ty tourism” advocacy, Mutya has
held its coronation ceremonies
in some of the country’s tourist
spots, including Davao, Subic,
Puerto Princesa and Aurora.

And on its 42nd year, Mutya
will make its most daring move
by having a female-dominated
executive committee. It will be
headed by Fortune Ledesma,
along with Tati Fortuna, manag-
ing director of Scribbleworks
Production, Inc.
Fortuna, whose Scribble-
works Production signed a fran-
chise management deal with
Mutya, said “our company is se-
rious about elevating this
pageant to the highest level.
This is a huge task and we are

new ideas on this project.”
But along with introducing
updates to the pageant, Fortuna
said she still aims to “go back to
its roots, focusing on the Filipina

Buboy should sit down

M Y heart goes out to my BFF Cesar Mon-
tano. People who don’t know the story be-
hind the story are calling him an ingrato
for cutting ties with his longtime manager, Tita Nor-
ma Japitana, and signing a one-year contract with
GMA 7 without her knowledge.
As far as I know, Buboy has
been closing deals on his own
for quite some time now, and
his arrangement with Tita
Norma is on a per project ba-
sis. He is set to do a fanta-
sy/drama on the Kapuso net-
work which premieres Aug. 2
in time for his birthday.
At this point, it’s only
Buboy and Tita Norma who
should sit down and talk. The
last thing they need is the
meddling of Pami (Profession-
al Artists Managers Inc.) and
the media. That will only ag-
gravate matters.
Buboy has suffered a dou-
ble whammy with the death
of his son Angelo and his
failed gubernatorial bid. He
hasn’t fully recovered yet, but
he has to get back to work to
provide for his family.
Knowing Buboy and Tita
Norma, they will make peace
soon enough—away from the
media circus. After all, they
are family. Their ties are more
binding than any network
contract.

B ITTER rivals Ateneo de Manila University and De
La Salle University are meeting for the 64th time in
the UAAP (DLSU currently leads series, 33 - 30)
this Saturday, July 24.
The rosters of both schools have
changed throughout the years and
correspondingly, their strengths and
weaknesses have also been changed.
Below is a breakdown of this sea-
son’s Blue Eagles and Green Archers
heading into Saturday’s showdown.
ATENEO
Strengths
• EXPERIENCE—Ten of the current
Blue Eagles were part of last year’s
championship squad and seven of
them have won two titles.
Including the Final Four and Finals,
Ateneo, with the core of Eric Salamat,
Kirk Long, Nico Salva and Ryan Bue-
nafe, has gone a combined 32 - 3 dur-
ing the previous two seasons.
• FRONT COURT —While Ateneo
may no longer have Rabeh Al-Hussaini
and Nonoy Baclao to terrorize the
paint, the Blue Eagles’ front court re-
mains formidable as the likes of Salva,
Justin Chua, Frank Golla and new-
comers Jason Escueta, Arthur Dela
Cruz and JP Erram have all done their
share on both ends of the floor.
Salva (team best 12.7 ppg) has
emerged as the go-to-guy of Ateneo
while Chua finally had his breakout
performance against UST last Sunday
(17 pts., 11 rebs, 4 blks). Meanwhile,
Golla, Escueta, Dela Cruz and Erram
have been perfect complimentary
players.
The Blue Eagles are presently tied
with NU for number one in terms of
points in the paint allowed (23.3
ppg).
Weaknesses
• PERIMETER SCORING AND
THREE-POINT SHOOTING—Ateneo
ranked first in the league in three-
point shooting (31.5%) and perimeter
scoring (29.3 ppg) last season.
However, in this campaign the Blue
Eagles currently rank last and second-
to-the-last in three-point shooting
(15.9%) and perimeter scoring (15.7
ppg), respectively.
While the departure of last year’s

T HESE sweet-shooting days, popular songs often
use elements of older or classic songs and rein-
vent them in a dynamic new way.
So it goes with the UAAP’s
Ateneo-La Salle game. The sin-
gle most potent basketball rival-
ry in the Philippines returns to
screen and screams this Sat-
urday with the very new
mixed in with the old re-
liables.

come into this
game missing
three major
contributors
from last
year’s title

Rabeh

Jai

Together with returning head
coach Norman Black, the Blue
Eagles bring height and heft for
their ambitious try at three
straight titles, often deploying
at the same time two of their
burly big men: 6-5 Jason Escue-
ta, 6-5 Justin Chua, 6-4 Frank
Golla and 6-7 JP Erram.
But while the aggressive Kirk
Long and the gifted Nico Salva
have picked up the scoring
slack with timely scoring, the
Loyola-based squad will
look to captain Eric Sala-
mat and fiery Emman
Monfort to provide needed
stability in the backcourt.

For the Blue Eagles to take
this game, the little men will
have to come up big.
Backcourt players, ironically,
is what the De La Salle Green
Archers have in spades. New
coach Dindo Pumaren, himself
a former DLSU point-guard, has
turbocharged the vaunted DLSU
press with La Salle’s seven rook-
ies, anchored by resurgent vet-
eran Simon Atkins, who seems
to have discovered his shooting
touch, and headstrong forward
Joshua Webb.
Samuel Marata and Joel To-
lentino bring perimeter shoot-
ing from the bench. This DLSU
lineup is almost unrecognizable
from the Green Archers’ last ti-
tle squad, back in 2007.
That makeover continues to
evolve, but some things never
change. La Salle’s frontline
players—in particular centers
Ferdinand and Yutien Andra-
da—will have to deliver strong
performances to cancel the Blue
Eagles’ size advantage.
The numbers are already
compelling. Ateneo is looking for
its seventh straight win over the
Taft dribblers, something un-
thinkable when one looks back
at DLSU’s 1990s supremacy.

comrades still suit up in oppos-
ing blue and green.
But the fates have conspired
to add even more tension to

Regardless of who emerges
victorious on the hardcourt, it is
a rivalry that, ever evolving and
ever progressive, remains as
timeless as ever.
