Graduate Program Student Learning Outcomes
Graduate Program Student Learning Outcomes
As you proceed through the graduate nursing program, you will engage in numerous learning activities
that relate to professional nursing standards and guidelines. This exercise provides an opportunity to link
your learning activities to the nursing standards. In the graduate nursing program these standards, among
others, provide the basis for the curriculum:
Provide an understanding of the integration of professional nursing standards into the graduate
program curriculum,
Enable reflection of achievement of each professional standard as evidenced by learning activities in
the graduate program, and
Link the program outcomes to the learning activities throughout the graduate nursing program.
1. Integrate advanced knowledge and theories from nursing and related disciplines into the nurse educator role
2. Use scientific inquiry and quality principles to identify problems and individualize patient care designed to improve care
outcomes
3. Apply advanced knowledge of leadership and management to effect change, and influence health policy to transform care
delivery systems
4. Practice inter-professional collaboration for improving patient and population health outcomes
5. Demonstrate competence in the advanced nursing role to meet current and emerging health needs of a global changing society
6. Apply teaching/learning principles with patients and/or students across the continuum of care in a variety of settings
The professional standards are provided below; you may refer to the sources above for the detailed
descriptions of the standards.

Research study critique assignment helped students achieve all of the outcomes above. The
assignment required the student to look at research in the nursing field and then dissect it to get a
better understanding of the research. This assignment required the student to use many different
skill sets to analysis.

The research project in this course required the student to look at research studies and then create
a research proposal and then complete their research on individuals. This project provided the
student a chance to learn about the research process, participate in research data collection, and
then present their findings. This process helps to improve students knowledge related to the
research aspect of the nursing field and how research impacts academia and how they go hand in
hand.

The use of shadow health helped to achieve the SLO for this course. Using the Patient Tina Jones,
I was able to identify different health issues and assessments related to them. The assessment of
Tina required a systematic approach and was done at an advance practice level. The use of this
technology also introduced the me to new technology and ways it could be used in the classroom
as an educator. The use of the technology allowed assessment of a client that may not be seen in
routine practice based on where a student works and allows for global care of the client.

NURS 601 This course required students to create a curriculum and identify different
teaching strategies the student would use to teach the material. This required
research on different strategies and seeing if they would work with your topic
of choice. The student also created measurement tools to utilize to validate
the material transformation to students. This course assignment met multiple
outcomes as noted above. The student needed to choose a topic and work
through how they would deliver the content and how to measure outcomes.
This experience is essential, as one gets ready to enter the education field.

NURS 602 The week 2 Dq in this course required the student to look at curricular
change. This assignment had the student look at CCNE and ACEN and how
they influence change in nursing education. The assignment also had students
look to other regulatory agencies to see their impact as well. This assignment
helped show students why curricular changes occur and who helps to drive
them. The assigned can be seen as quality initiatives and looking at the new
requirements to improve the education process. It also has students look to
internal factors that could impact the change of curricular.

NURS 603 The assignment that required the student to find NCLEX style questions and
then dissect them was a helpful assignment in this course. This assignment
required knowledge of question construction. This was an area of interest
that still is being developed in my role as an educator. The ability to look at
questions and find ways to improve them to make the question test higher
levels of blooms. This is a skill many educators will need if their course
requires test construction. Then the component of looking at how the
question did based on statistical data to make improvements on it for the next
time it is used. All these skills are needed to advance as an educator and
create evaluation tools to help ensure students are ready to help others.

The learning contract and the practicum hours helped meet the above mentioned standards. The
learning contract helped to teach me how to write out SLO and then different activities to achieve
them. I attended the RAM event, which helped me meet all of the program standards. I was able
to use principles of nursing to care for patients, but also got to teach nursing students about
different topics at the event as well. The event required that I interact with a number of different
people from a diversity of backgrounds. With the event based around helping those in need it
helped show the global needs in health care and the true lack of accessible healthcare to all. The
final part was doing a presentation to the SUNY Delhi community which helped show them what
we did at the event and the lack of healthcare in our own country. This helped show alternative
ways to provide healthcare and the need to think outside the box.

The reflective journal assignment helped to achieve these outcomes. The journal
assignment required that the student attend a service related meeting and I choose to attend
a meeting on assessment and then one with the curriculum committee. Both these
meetings looked at improving courses. The assessment meeting looked at how SLO lined
up with assignments and ensured the course was meeting all the SLO. The curriculum
meeting talked about how instructors propose changes to the curriculum and how the
process works. These meeting showed leadership requirements of an educator and also
how faculty work together to improve the program for the changing needs of the healthcare
community.
