askedwhyIbothered.IsaidIdiditforthebeauty.

O.K.,Illadmititsasillygame:Youhavetomakethenumberswithinthegrid
obeycertainmathematicalconstraints,andwhentheydo,allthepiecesfitnicely
togetherandyougetthisrushofharmonyandorder.

Still,itmakesmewonderwhatitisaboutmathematicalthinkingthatisso
elegantandaestheticallyappealing.Isittheinternallogic?Theuniquemixof
simplicityandexplanatorypower?Orperhapsjustitspureintellectualbeauty?

IvelovedmathsinceIwasakidbecauseitfeltlikeabiggameandbecauseit
seemedlikethelaziestthingyoucoulddomentally.Afterall,howmanyfactsdoyou
needtoremembertodomath?

Laterincollege,Igotexcitedbyphysics,whichIguessyoucouldsayisjusta
grandexerciseinapplyingmathtounderstandtheuniverse.Myroommate,abrainy
mathmajor,usedtobaitme,sayingthatIneverreallyunderstoodthemathIwas
using.IwouldcounterthatheneverunderstoodwhatonEarththemathhestudied

thescan.Theywerealsoaskedtoratetheirlevelofunderstandingofeachequation
andtheirsubjectiveemotionalresponsetoit,fromuglytobeautiful.

Theresearchersfoundastrongcorrelationbetweenfindinganequation
beautifulandactivationofthemedialorbitofrontalcortex,aregionoftheprefrontal

understoodcompletelyyetfoundugly.
