Major Assignment 3 Bibliography

Proposal: Has the Americanization of non democratic countries created animosity

toward America? I will research how other countries react to American culture

integrating with their own, specifically countries American has conflicts with. I already

know about animosity from middle eastern countries and some countries that were once

part of the soviet union. I know that the spread of English as a global language also

causes this. I want to know if American culture is a reason why people dislike America,

and not just our military operations. I think I will learn how people feel about hollywood

and the American persona from other perspectives. I think it will confirm my opinion that

other countries have a skewed view as to what the everyday American is like.

-Kuisel, Richard F. Seducing the French: The Dilemma of Americanization. Berkeley: U

of California, 2007. Print.

After the first world war American influence seeped into French culture during

rebuilding. Many people saw this as a cancer and did not want American influence.

After WW2 even more American influence came into the country. America represented

commercialism and with hollywood, it represented flashy life. France had to take parts

of American culture that it liked while also keeping the French life intact.
The author works in the History department in Georgetown University for European and

German studies.

I think this source is credible and gives me insight as to how other countries view

American influence from another western cultures perspective. I learned how the world

wars put American culture into other countries.

I can draw connections between this and the following citation. Both agree that America

isnt solely responsible for its influence.

-Scammell, Margaret. "The Wisdom of the War Room: US Campaigning and

Americanization." Media, Culture & Society 20.2 (1998): 251-75. Web.

This article discusses how Americanization happens. It speaks about globalism and

that since America is a global leader, it makes sense that more things have its influence.

Since globalism is the trend of the world, then America can not be blamed for being an

influence.

SInce it is a peer reviewed article it has high credibility. Its bias could be from a British

perspective.

I agree with its claims. I too believe that globalism is to blame fro American influence in

other countries, at least in part.

This supports and connects with the claims of why France had influence from America

long after the war, it was globalism at play.

-Kagan, Robert A. "Globalization and Legal Change: The Americanization of European

Law?" Globalization and Legal Change: The Americanization of European Law? -

EU legality is influenced by American law. The source uses case studies to support its

claim. It says there is a legal convergence of European and American law. It argues

that globalism and neoliberalism have come influenced European law from America. It

does point out that there is opposition to this at the end.

It is a peer reviewed article from an author from Berkeley in the political science and

school of law.

I agree with this source. I see how American law has influenced other western

countries. I did not know that Americanization of other countries also included their

legal system.

I connect this with the earlier 2 sources because it ties together European and American

culture combining, but also their governments as well.

-West, James. "Economic Patriotism and the Americanization of Canada." Financial

Post. Midas Letter, 26 Aug. 2016. Web. 03 Apr. 2017.

American companies and enterprise are taking over Canadian business. American

corporations are hollowing out the Canadian economy. The article says their cultures

are being homogenized. It argues that Canadians need more economic patriotism

This author has been covering the Canadian economy for over 30 years. The publisher

is an influential economic news source in Canada. It maybe biased due to it being a

Canadian publication.
I learned that even our close Allies have a problem with American companies

influencing them.

This is yet another western country source that has been influenced by America,

arguably our closest ally.

This comic depicts Mcdonalds very out of place in downtown Paris. It looks like an

eyesore. It was created due to the McDonald's opening up in the Louvre.

The author is a online creator who uses a blog. He doesnt have clout beyond that, but

since it is art I think it is ok.

I agree with the source, a very french location like the Louvre should have French shops

to show tourists their culture. Not a multi national corporation.

This relates to the first source about French dealing with American influences in their

culture.

-Amatori, Franco. "Americanization of the European Economy: A Compact Survey of

American Economic Influence in Europe since the 1880s (review)." Enterprise &

Society. Cambridge University Press, 28 Feb. 2006. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

This book argues that Americanization happened to Europe in three distinct waves. It

also argues that American Capitalism affected Western European countries. It says

technology, political, and cultural transfer.

The author is a professor of history at the University of Bergen, Norway. He maybe

biased from a European perspective.

I learned that Americanization of western countries happened in all facets of life and

government.

This source supports the other arguments about the Americanization of other western

countries.

-Gillam, Victor. "MIT Visualizing Cultures." MIT Visualizing Cultures. N.p., n.d. Web. 04

Apr. 2017.

The political cartoon depicts Uncle Sam carrying indigenous people on his back on a

mountain toward civilization. The indigenous people are shown disliking being carried.

This cartoon is in reference to the Philippine take over during American Imperialism.

The author was a cartoonist for the New York world and Judge, St. Louis Dispatch. His

bias was from that time since he was born in 1858.

I learned how to integrate American Imperialism into this essay. It is a much more

intense form of Americanization.

This cartoon connects with the other sources because it makes America look like the

best country, while doing the wrong thing.

-McClennen, Sophia A., and Donald E. Pease. "The New American Exceptionalism

(review)." Symploke. University of Nebraska Press, 18 May 2011. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

America has believed in its exceptionalism starting after WW2 during the cold war. This

continued until the collapse of the soviet Union. Then it became America was so
exceptional it should begin the war on terror, which the author believes is another

unwinnable war.

The author has credibility from the University of Dartmouth.

I think this source is a good way to show Americanization in the modern era. I will use it

to end my essay about the war on terror.

It connects well with the source about American Imperialism as a contrast in time.

-Tota, Antonio Pedro, Lorena B. Ellis, and Daniel J. Greenberg. "The Seduction of

Brazil." Project MUSE. University of Texas Press, 2009. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

This book uses Brazil to talk about how American alliances influenced the Brazilian

culture. He uses the example of a thumbs up, something so innocuous, and how it

replaced the Brazilian way of touching your earlobe when in agreement. The Good

Neighbor policy influenced Brazilian culture with American culture.

This was published in the University of Texas press, giving it credibility.

I think this source will be a good case study to use in my essay. I can pull more

examples of how America has affected other countries and cultures.

I can connect this source with the one about France. It shows how the U.S culture

affects its own allies.

-Legrain, Phillippe. "Cultural Globalization Is Not Americanization." Philippe Legrain

RSS. N.p., 09 May 2003. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.

Americanization is not to blame for globalization. People speak English more often but

it isnt Americas sole fault. Countries in a way are oppressive. They force a culture

upon you. Globalization allows you to choose another way of life. It is beneficial to
individuals, not nations. The culture collective is a better thing, it brings the people at

the bottom up. Its a rising tide lifting all ships. It gives jobs to the countries who need it

the most. It spreads science and technology, advancing the lives and health of all

people.

This author is a British economist and writer who focuses on globalization. His biases

could exist from a European perspective.

I like this source because it is a foil to the other sources that are anti globalization. It will

be a good source to argue with or against depending on what my conclusion will be

about Americanization in the global world.

I can connect it with the sources that do not blame America for the globalization

happening around the world. It supports those arguments.
