HB0043

AMERICAN INDIAN AND ALASKAN NATIVE

EDUCATION
Originating Chamber: House
Chief Sponsor: Michael E. Noel

I rise in support of this bill and urge in the remaining stages of its processing through the Utah
House and Senate. My reasoning comes out of direct experience in the demographic that the
bill targets. I have family who are school aged children in this district and I believe the ability to
have efficient relatable teachers who retain their professions in these schools with such a
vulnerable population will be a direct significant factor in the future of these children.

Status:
I watched the debates as it passed its originating chamber and jumped back and forth after a
few amendments and a fiscal amount cut in half. However, the House and the Senate floor both
concurred final passage with a 72 yeas and 1 nay in which it was signed by the speaker of the
House and the president of the Senate on the 45th day of the session.
I emailed both my representatives in support of this bill but never received a response.
Yaahteh Senator Mayne and Representative Kwan,

I write to you in support of House Bill 0043, American Indian and Alaskan Native Education.

I humbly greet you in the indigenous language of this land. I come from Native American
heritage and I urge you to support a bill that targets a great issue that burden young Native
American school-aged children. The recruitment, retention, and development of teachers who
are responsible for such a vulnerable population will, I believe, have a significant benefactor in
the future of these children. If you research adolescent dropout rates, suicide rates, and overall
deprivation due to colonialism, Native Americans are at the top of those percentages. The
quality of education can be the power to invoke change in statistics and provide the support
needed to focus on a demographic who necessitate it.

I ask you to join me and rise in support of HB0043.

Aheheh,

Secadio Sanchez
