nicelybetweenourtwospringprojects.ThefirstPBLunitbeganimmediatelyafterwe
returnedfromWinterBreak.ThisprojectcoveredUnitedStatessymbolsandleaders.
WhileIwasveryintriguedbythetopicthetimingwouldhavemadeitdifficulttoplan
andimplementmyTWSunitasIwaseasingintothenewdemandsofstudentteaching.
Teachingthemapsandglobesunitallowedmemoretimetoplanandmoreautonomyto
createnewlessons.
Anotherimportantfactorinmydecisionwasthatthistopichasastrong
connectiontotheColoradoAcademicStandards.Asthegeographystandardsnote
understandingaspatialperspectiveisimportantinunderstandinghowplacesare
connectedatthelocal,nationalandglobalscales.Geographyhelpsstudentsappreciate
therelationshipsandinterrelatednessofpeople,placesandenvironments.InApriland
Maythestudentswouldundertaketheirplantsandgardenproject,whichincorporates
wellness,socialstudiesandreading,writingandcommunicatingstandards.Oneofthe
importantthemesofthatprojectiswherefoodcomesfromandhowfoodisoften
producedinotherpartsoftheworldandtransportedfardistances.Ifeltthatintroducing
mapsandglobescouldhelpbuildfoundationalknowledgethatwouldsupporttheir

gardenprojectlearning.Thestandardstaughtinthemapsandglobesunitdiscussed
belowwouldhelpstudentstograspthesubsequentstandardsdevelopedduringtheplant

thataffectfamilyandfriendsandb)Giveexamplesofhowpeopleuseandinterrelated

MyfinalreasonforchoosingtoteachaboutmapsandglobeswasbecauseI
rememberlearningaboutthesevencontinentsinfirstgradeandhavingtrouble
conceptualizingtheideathatpeoplelivedindifferentplacesandthatcities,states,
countriesandcontinentswereseparateandsomehowrelated.Oneofmygoalsbecameto
ensurethatstudentscouldidentifytheseaccuratelyandexplaintheirrelationshiptoone
another.
