First things first

What IS Digital Identity?

In real life, an identity is what makes up who we are, including our beliefs and
attitudes that are presented to the world around us (Contri & Galaski, 2017).

Figure 1: Fingerprint Identity, 2016

A digital identity derives from the basis of just that

it is an online or networked personal presence of
an individual that uniquely describes, and contains
information about them (Friedman & Wagoner,
2017).

Your digital identity is made up of many different

pieces of information and attributes. The more
attributes there are, the more established your
online presence is (Contri & Galaski, 2017).

How is a Digital Identity Created and Kept?

All of your activities on the internet are recorded.

Whether its posting on Facebook, logging into a
website or simply the click of a button, everything
you do online is archived and can be retraced.

Figure 3: Data Stored, 2015

This is whats known as a digital footprint, as we leave traces of ourselves
behind everywhere we go on the web. Our footprint is permanent, and can
never be erased once it is made public even if it is deleted.

Figure 5: Digital Footprint, 2015

Quite similar to a tattoo it goes deeper than the surface, it is almost impossible to remove, and is
unique to the owner in a way that creates a reputation or meaning to the outside world... except it
can be viewed by EVERYONE.

Your digital tattoo can be a positive one, and that is why we must incorporate digital security and
awareness into teaching and learning in this digital world we live in.

So what must we do in our Teaching?

We must teach individuals from childhood live and participate appropriately amongst the digital
age. Because they will live in a society saturated by technology, they must learn how to navigate
themselves around the web safely and securely (Scheaffer, 2014).

Figure 5: Children Technology, 2016

By educating children on appropriate usage and security behaviours on the Internet will teach
children from the beginning that all activities online are recorded and can have an impact on their
lives.

There are multiple ways a person can be safe, secure and appropriate online, to ensure their digital
footprint is a positive one...

Here are some points to consider when crafting your own positive digital identity!
